I need a recommendation for a good doctor in Raleigh/Durham area please.

Once again on the hunt for a good thyroid doctor. I live in Raleigh, but can drive to Cary, Durham and surrounding area. Does anyone know of a good doctor? I don't care about the specialty as long as they understand and know how to treat hypothyroidism, Hashi's and female hormones.

I drove from Goldsboro Seymour Johnson AFB to see him, that's about 90 miles one way for me :)

Thanks! He's a long drive from where I work (downtown Raleigh), but I'll look him up.

me me me.... I just went today... Dr. David Ontjes UNC Specialty clinic off Fayetteville Rd. in Durham..

I just went to see him today and he is AWESOME.. He actually specializes in thyroid and adrenal disease.  he took so much time with me today and took notes and understood what i was saying and took the time to answer all of my questions, he wants to treat my symptoms and he is working WITH me to get me feeling good whatever that might take, he is open minded and very patient.. I'm soooo impressed and so happy to have found him.. I have included a couple of other patient comments about him, the thing i disagree with on the first one is they said the staff was rude, but my experience today the staff was sooo nice, they greeted me with a smile and hello and welcome to UNC as i walked in the door, they were all very friendly, I got seen very quickly and the doctor was in the room for a good 30 minutes going over my history and examining me etc.. I'm a very happy patient..
These are the other 2 patient reviews:

Dr. Ontjes is one of the best Endocrinologists I have ever seen. Dealing with Hypothyroidism for 23 years, he is the only one who took time to take an in depth analysis of my history, change my medication and amounts, and I've never felt better. I recommend him to everyone. The staff is less than desirable, but I can overlook that if it means seeing a phenomenal doctor.

3/27/09 2 3 5 5  Dr. Ontjes saw me on quite short notice. I had been seen for typical healthcare by a regular practice for a variety of symptoms and essentially told I was creating my symptoms out of anxiety. Dr. Ontjes immediately noted a prominent thyroid gland and found that I had an advanced Graves Disease condition which was extremely fragile. He was very supportive, taking time to explain in detail what Graves Disease entails and how it could impact my quality of life. It took quite a long treatment regime to correct, now I am back to a degree of normalcy. Despite my many questions and concerns, Dr. Ontjes always took time to listen and respond fully. I am a proactively involved in my healthcare, but had become paranoid that I was overreactive. Clinic staff were not ideal, there was always a wait, but the nurses were informative and knowledgeable. Dr. Ontjes, who seems to be understated and reserved, was so helpful and gave me much information to aid me in making health decisions.

Hopefully you might get a recommendation from a member with personal experience with a good thyroid doctor in your area.  If not, here is a site that lists some thyroid docs in your area.  It is listed by city within your state.  It's very worthwhile to read the patient feedback.
