i was taking 75 mcg thyroxine when i was tested for TSH,FT3 and FT4, my readings were as follows

TSH - 2.498 ulU/ml range (0.550 - 4.780)

free T3  2.47 pg/ml  range ( 2.30 - 4.20 )

hi i have got my report  and it is as follows
TSH 1.99 ulU/ml range - 0.30 - 5.5
FT3  2.38 pg/ml  range - 1.7 - 4 .2
FT4  1.23 ng/dl   range - 0.7 - 1.8
i have some issues with this report first is that the range differs with every lab so it is difficult to compare , secondly when i got myself tested in january the lab told me not eat my morning dose prior to giving  blood however this time i was told eat your medicine and then only give blood. having said this i want to add that my FT3 was 8.9 % above the minimum range in Jan and is 19% above the minimum range now however my thinking is that this change is due to the fact that i had taken my morning dose. FT4 there is no change ,as far as TSH is concerned from 46 % above the minimum it has reached 32.5 % above the minimum.

i ate 125 mcg throxine in the last two days and my constant stomach ache vanished .

my question is simple can i safetly eat 125 mcg throxine or it will  have some adverse effect on my body.

my own view is that i should eat 125 mcg for next six weeks, monitor my symptoms and then get tested again.

thanx.

hi , have finally met a endochronologist and she is a HOD in  a reputed hospital, she saw my readings of 21 jan and was of the opinion that i should stick to 75 mcg thyroxine, she also said that stomach ache had nothing to do with hypothyroidism. i asked her about special medicine for FT3 but she said not required. on the other hand i have this stomach pain and if i reduce the dose to 75 mcg do not know what will happen.
any advice ?

Hi,

from your symptoms you could still be hypo.  However, for the sake of proper testing and recording your response it would be best to do the blood tests (TSH, FT3, FT4) before you increase meds.

Actually you could probably test soon - maybe next week (as long as a full 4 weeks have passed since you increased your meds) if you really can't wait until the 6 weeks are up.  From what i've read the retest should be 4 - 6 weeks after any change in meds.  There may still be a small change in the last 2 weeks to get to 6 weeks, but it will be very small compared to the changes in the first 4 weeks.

Let us know how you go.

hi i had got myself tested on 18 jan and the readings were as posted above, i started taking 100 mcg throxine thereafter and my stomach pain went away, now today that is almost a month after my stomach pain has come back, i am in a fix should i wait for at least six week to elapse before i get myself tested again or should i try and increase my dose by 25 mcg to see the difference it makes on my stomach ache.

my other symptoms is i feel cold all the time.

my own assessment is that my stomach ache is directly related to hypothyroid after i have increased my thyroxine dose to 100 mcg i am perfectly fine, yes and will get myself retested after 6 weeks.

If the stomach ache goes away when you're on 100 mcg, maybe that is the right dose for you.  A 25 mcg increase is not a big one.

From the numbers you gave, it would be ok for your TSH to be a bit lower (1 - 2 range is often found ok) and for the FT3/FT4 to be a bit higher (middle to upper 1/2 of the reference range).

The thing would be to increase your dose back to 100 mcg.  Test blood again in 6 weeks to make sure your numbers are still within the range.  IF your numbers are still well within range and you're feeling better that would be your final answer.

my problem is that my only symptom is that i get continuous stomach ace  and when i increased my dose by 25 mcg i started feeling better , but my problem is that the doctor says that the stomach ace is not related to thyroid medicine and i should stick to 75 mcg, and with this my stomach ace returns ,

i suppouse i should take ur advice and resume taking 100 mcg, my only worry is that will there be any complications if i take 100 mcg thyroxine (based on my current readings)

Hello,

we can't tell you the exact amount of medicine you should be taking.  However, from your results where both FT3 and FT4 are at the low end of the ranges, I think that an increase in your meds.  Probably by 25 mcg could be tried.

Many people on thyroid meds feel best if their TSH is < 2.0 and if their Ft3 and FT4 are at least middle of the range.

How do you feel?  Do you still have hypothyroid symptoms?
