Shortages over -- Naturethroid/Westroid - back on shelves Next Week!
If you are one of the hypothyroid patients that’s been effected with getting desiccated thyroid medication due to shortages, After months of agonizing for many desiccated thyroid patients on what will happen, I spoke to Leslie Cox at RLC labs yesterday. RLC labs are the makers of the prescription Naturethroid/Westhroid and the news I received was good in my opinion and the fear could finally be placed to rest.
Let me give you a run down of the questions I spoke to her about and when these meds will be back on shelves.
When and who will be seeing these shipments? Answer: - the pharmacies and doctors who placed the orders at the beginning of the shortage will start to see the 1 grain tablets coming in next week.
When will the other grains come? Answer: the 2 grain will come next then 15 and 30mgs. This may take a few months...
We were told production delays were the reason for the delays twice. Could this situation happen again with this shipment? Answer: - No - I don't see this happening again. We are on the tail end of production so no delays this time should happen.
Is there anything we can do as patients to support you if NDA becomes an issue. answer: - as of right now no - there is nothing different happening with this medication as it was years ago. We have our lawyers that have taken care of this NDA for years now. If we need you - we will certainly be in touch.
Is the FDA interfering with production with RLC labs? - answer: No - and we have many people that work on this too for us to keep us producing thyroid correctly under the FDA guidelines for Natural Desiccated Thyroid ( NDT).
With Forest and their delays months ago - they changed their fillers and the Armour they produced was different. Many failed on this new formula. Have you changed anything with Naturethroid/Westhroid? Answer: No - nothing was changed it still is as effective as what it was and we didn't change a thing to it.
With many that failed on the new Armour thyroid they switched to your thyroid medication. Will you be able to keep up with this demand since many stopped taking Armour and chose now to use Naturethroid/Westhroid? - Absolutely, we have increased our production triple to meet the demands since the Armour change. We will and have - increased to meet all the demands both now and in the future if more patients make the switch to NT.
Why were some of us told that shipments may not be out until February 2010? answer : At the time of the last delay - we were not sure when to expect the medication release. Things were moved along quickly and we were able to meet an earlier date. Customer service people also did not know exactly when a shipment would be out back then.
( this answer seems to blend in on time frames with all the posts back in November.)
Do you get your supply of USP thyroid powder from anywhere but a US manufacturer? Do you use New Zealand plants for the powder? Answer: No - we only get the powder from here in the states. We do not get anything from New Zealand.
(Wanted to ask that because I was told in November that indeed they did - but I believe her more than what I was told at their customer service back in June 09)
Will you have this update on your website? - Yes - we are changing the look of our site and we were hoping to have this release up - prior to shipping. It will be on there soon.
... And that was about it... She was awesome to speak to. Through the conversation I offered many thanks to her for giving me this information and I am so relieved. I believe we are going to see NDT out there very soon. At least 1 grain tablets next week. Of course - this release of information certainly does not solve the horrible way Forest pharmacuticals did to many by changing the filler components in Armour which resulted in many users of Armour thyroid being ill, but... at least hope is back with RLC shipping out Naturethroid/Westhroid so many desiccated thyroid patients can return back to health appropriately.
As a personal note - I pray this is over and these meds do not disappear again off the shelves. It has been a hassel for me to get what I need to survive and I am thankful this news broke. It's been the best Christmas present I ever received.

Has anyone found Naturethroid yet? I called Walgreens and a small Pharmacy close to my home and no luck. I have be on compounded armour w/acidophilus filler and feel ok but not as good as Naturethroid . Stella thanks for all the info without you I would be lost! Happy New year everyone!
