Labs from January shows TSH at 1.1 so NO FURTHER testing was done.

Labs from August 2010 shows TSH 0.56

                                            free T3  @   4.3
                                            free T4  @  15.2

reference range stated TSH (0.5 - 4.5)
Free T3                               (2.6 - 5.7)
Free T 4                              (9 - 19)

Sheesh, that's what I was wondering if you went hyper with the kelp. That is totally irresponsible of the doctor!
Wait till you find out what is happening withe the uptake testing before making any decisions about surgery. It may well be treatable without surgery.

Can you put the FT3 and FT4 results with the ref ranges up?
Do you have any symptoms apart from the gravelly voice (which I have had!)

I love Tassie! Bit cold sometimes but then again Vic is having pretty revolting cold weather at the moment.
Cheers

I am just across the pond from you in NW Tassie

Yeh I got a copy of test results today and Free T3 and 4 in the OK range as well. It seems I do not need any extra iodine as shown when I went hyper while on kelp, so I am now going to have radioactive test on my thyroid before seeing surgeon down in Hobart to discuss options. Goitre is growing and pressing on something in my throat. It is not one of the huge ones, just annoying me and giving me a gravelly voice at times. Doc says it is unlikely to shrink so surgery is an option.

Your kidding me? Your doc told you to take kelp???? My goodness! Wonders will never cease!

Now as for the TSH, why oh why do the docs keep using that as the yardstick for thyroid disease on its own? Have you had any Free T3 or Free T4 or even better; BOTH testing done?
Where in Aus are you? I am in Melbourne.
