There was a couple on the new Acella last fall I think. Never came back to tell us.

The dessicated meds call all react different for the same person due to different formulations and fillers. That is what affects absorbing. That is why some of us bother with Erfa, we tried the rest and this was best for us, it was obvious after the change.

You have to try them yourself to know. That is the only way unfortunately.

Well, theres already another shortage....just went for refill and my pharm could not get it, had to transfer script to a city half an hour away. I had to go on Armour for about a month in July and have been back on NP for maybe a month and a half. I havent seen other message boards, but was told by Acella that there was no change in the med, yet the consistency seemed different. I thought I would feel better quickly (felt like crap on Armour) but really didn't. Thanks for the heads up, will do some reading. It's ridiculous that there are 2 shortages in such a small amount of time, especially if they reformulated. Thanks and good luck to your son :)

I switched my son to NP for convenience, but he did terrible on it, so I just switched him back to Erfa last week.  He say he feels better already.  Now I'm hearing that the new NP that's coming out after THIS recent shortage has changed, that's at least what people are saying on the thyroid boards.

Luckily I have never had a problem getting my NP in the past year and a half, and I've lived in 2 states in that time. I say stick with what works...I couldn't take the Erfa, but could take the NP.

Just went back in this thread and I had heard NP was stronger before even starting it and then it WAS stronger. I remember reading that their 1 grain is actually 65mg. I think it still states that in the product description or whatever it's called, yet on the NP main page, the 65mg isn't mentioned...hmmm.

I went off Armour because I thought it was poison to me, turned out to be other things in the end. Have been feeling the same way about NP and thanks to this thread I am reminded of that and will hold tight, get other issues straightened out (hopefully). and then decide that.

I must have had a hypo moment (a good excuse) and didnt read your comment right, oops.....

I have though of changing from Erfa to NP, simply since NP is sold in the states and who knows when the feds might shut down the boarder to import meds like Erfa.

Unfortunatly NP has had several supply issues in its 2 or 3 years, which in my opinion is unacceptable. This should not happen.

I was saying that Erfa and NP both have dextrose---have that in common. Compounded was a separate thing, just not great at stringing sentences together these days..lol.
I tried Erfa for a few days once, my eyes ached badly and went back to compounded, which had olive oil as a filler btw. Then switched to NP.
I don't know if it's me and other problems I am having but just not so sure about NP right now...and should have asked mountainpass exactly WHY he wants to switch his son to NP from Erfa. Convienience? Is he not doing well on it? Just curious.

Jackie,

You mean your compounding place copies the actual NP brand, down to the dextrose filler? I didn't think they could legally do that.

Why do you use a compounded copy of NP when NP is available at big box retailers?

The best feature with a dextrose dessicated pill is its sublingual capabilities. Timing med away from food is not needed then. I eat all day, (graze) as opposed to big meals, that's why I love taking Erfa sublingual.

I have been on Erfa for 3 years. It uses dextrose (sugar) as a filler like pre 09 Armour did. NP Acella also uses dextrose.

Post '09 Arrmour and Nature Throid both use microcrystalline cellulose as a filler.

The filler is what makes the difference between one North American Dessicated and another, thus effecting absorbancy. It is said that all North American dessicated brands use the pork hormone from the same supplier.

The change frpm Erfa to NP, technically should be easier than others.

I wasn't on Erfa, but had gone from Armour to Compounded to NP. The NP seemed stronger to me. I believe both kl42 and I both had higher readings than we expected on our first tests after starting it. If I'm not mistaken, Erfa more closely resembles NP ie; dextrose filler. I do know that I went for the same dose I was on with the compounded and had to lower the NP a bit, I believe the same thing happened to kl42, but cannot speak for him...good luck to your son!

Hope you are trying split doses!!

Me too Kevin! I did lower my own dose of NP slightly as well, but even felt great with my last numbers. I just moved and am exhausted, but was thinking I felt a tad hypo with the lower dosage but waiting til next week to see if it was just the move. i really like this and the shortage BETTER end....it's good to be fabulous!! a long time coming.

Doh! Sorry, I just assumed you may have started at a lower dose than the med you were on, to feel it out. From what I have read, Acella might possibly be a bit stronger than other dessicated and I have also read that compounded thyroid may be weaker than all of them. I find it pays to keep notes about med changes and symptoms and changes...please keep me posted!! thanks
