radioactive thyroid treatment

I am about to have radiactive iodine treatment in an attempt to tame my overactive thyroid.  My doctors assure me that, in the event of developing hypothroid problemas after treatment, that thyroxin will stop me from experiencing weigh gain issues.  I have taken Neomercazole on and off for 4 yrs and have generally lost weight or at least maintained my healthy body weight while my throid was normalised. I am worried that after treatment I will have tyhe opposite problem!

My Endo told me after RAI I would probably gain a "little weight"

Apparently a "little weight" translates into "you're gunna pack on 20 pounds with no changes to diet or exercise"

Your doc is lying to your face. Do not go into this thinking RAI is a fix for everything. You are about to under go a profound life changing event.

Sue - you could have weight issues. That is one of the most common things w/ Hypothyroidism symptoms. No doctor can assure you that you won't have this issue just by popping a pill. For some hypo's - it takes a complete life style change and a unique diet and supplement package to help them maintain  weight correctly.

Not sure if you were the same poster that asked this question on another post but the real question here is if you normalized on anti thyroid medication - why is RAI being done?

Is is Graves related? - I asked for more information on that other post as I mentioned above. If you are not the same person then also post some history here please.

Always keep in your priority thinking when it comes to RAI - if it is not absolutely necessary to have it done you will never reverse the outcome of it. This is not something that is a quick fix. It can - and is - a very needed procedure for some individuals - but it is not the "fix all" for all overactive thyroid situations.
