My doctor gave me a lidocaine patch to numb the pain, but for me it did not work. That does not mean that it did may not work for someone else however. It is commonly used for back pain. Also my neurologist said that one option to consider was capsaicin cream. He warned that it would be very painful at first and maybe make the TN worse before it got better. But that it technically would destroy the peripheral nerves on the surface, thus dulling the pain sensations. I didn't try it so I cannot speak for it's success. Nothing over the counter in a similar family worked at all, like Icy Hot, just so you know, although some people on this site have reported some relief with extra strength Oragel on their gums and teeth. Again, I just got some numbness but not relief. Everyone is different. To me, everything is worth a try. My best best still is the hot pack in the microwave or the ice pack in the freezer depending what I need at the time. To each his/her own.
I have the same diagnosis. There is a class of medications used for this but they have side effects but they are worth trying to see if you can tolerate. There is also a surgery where they can put a bit of teflon under the nerve to help.
Also try acupuncture and biofeedback and see if you have success. I do well with acupuncture.
