Low White Count

My 9 year old son has has a low white count for 5 months now.  His neutrophil count is also low and he has a high eosinophil count.  White count has been in the range of 1.8 to 4.  Neutrophils continue to be below 1500 and sometimes under 1000.  Eosinophil count as high as 20 but was normal at 1 during the first week of March but after that continued to climb.  Right now it is at 12%.  The last CBC showed his MPV was also slightly high at 11.8%.  He does complain of leg pain sometimes and has had mouth ulcers but other than that no other symptoms.  No fever since the first week of March which is when we discovered the abnormal counts.  Red blood cell count and platelets appear to be okay.

Worried Mom,

This post was from many years ago... but did you ever find out what was wrong with your son? I am going through this myself now. It's very scary to not have answers.

We did have his stool checked and no parasite was found.  He had a bone marrow biospy a few days ago and we are still waiting on the results.  He does have a new ucler in his mouth which makes it the 4th ulcer he has had during the month of July.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
In a kid low WBC with high eosinophils go more in favor of parasitic infections. Get his stool tested. The other possibility is viral infection, allergy, lupus, hyperthyroid states, hypersplenism, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Do consult his doctor.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
