Chest Pain

I am a 36 year old male and tonight I got a very sharp pain in the center of my chest.  It feels like it's around the sternum, not inside my chest.  It did not affect, nor was it affected by my breathing.  The severe pain lasted about 10 minutes and was very scary.  Scary enough that I grabbed my cell phone in case I needed to dial 911.  The pain was a little more intense if I hunched over.  Conversely, if pushed my shoulders back and pushed my chest out, the pain subsided somewhat.  My pulse was about 80 (normally it is 60).  This was about 90 minutes ago and my chest still has mild pain.  I had a simliar episode 6 days ago, although the pain disappeared completely after about 15 minutes.  I had one other episode about 3 weeks ago as well.  Any help is appreciated!

Numerous things can cause chest pains and some of those pains might make you swear you're having a heart attack but just be gas or indigestion.  Having said that you should NEVER ignor them..  Even the emergency department immediately moves one into triage room just to be safe.  As for you increased heart rate, that could easily be explained by being anxious over the pain.

It might be a good idea to get a thorough check up so as to rule out any possible heart condition.  By doing so you will be able relax to some degree next time the pain occurs by knowing that it is a non-life threatening pain and possibly controlled with something as simple as antacid etc..

Hope this info helps.

You go to the emergency room or @ least make a drs appointment you may have had a heart attack.. or it can be heart burn but just to be in the safe side you should make a drs.visit even though I strongly suggest you go to the emergency room just to be in the safe side

Thanks for your response.  I just got back from the doctor and, after an EKG and X-ray, the doctor is somewhat perplexed.  He does not see any type of heart related issues and thinks it is most likely some sort of acid reflux/upper GI issue and recommended using a couple kinds of antacids for the longterm.
