"Infiltrate" is a very generic term which does not imply a specific diagnosis. It refers the the collection of fluid where it should not be. There are 3 main causes: Cancer, infection and congestive heart failure.

Also, Interstitial lung disease refers to a group of diseases that are chronic, nonmalignant and noninfectious. These diseases are characterized by INFILTRATION of inflammatory cells into the walls of the alveoli (air sacs of the lungs). The INFILTRATION causes abnormal scarring in the connective tissue that supports the alveoli. If the disease progresses, scarring develops to the point that the lungs may be destroyed.

The causes of most interstitial lung disorders are unknown. A Physician who specializes in lung diseases can explain this in much more detail. They will provide the proper treatment and can give a general idea of the outcome.

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Lung has interstitial spaces which consist of air sacs (alveoli), the walls of alveoli, and the spaces around blood vessels and small airways. Diseases of these spaces are called interstitial or infiltrative lung diseases. These include infections, allergic or drug reactions, autoimmune disorders like SLE, mixed connective tissue disease etc. Generally there is fibrosis. Diagnosis is by pulmonary function tests and CT scan and other tests specific for the condition causing it.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
