Hard, fixed lumps at base of skull

I went to the doctor today because the day before yesterday I noticed a small, hard lump under the skin at the base of my skull. Then last night I noticed another to the right of the first one. They are both small, hard, and do not hurt or move around when I push on them. I've also had frequent headaches, occasional double vision and dizzy spells, and sometimes trouble speaking. The doctor poked my head for a second, then said that they are lymph nodes and have always been there. But they definitely have never felt like that. I have never had the tendencies of a hypochondriac before, and have had doctors at this hospital inject me with drugs that my chart said I am allergic to, and send me home saying I was having a miscarriage when I actually was just spotting. They do not seem very patient focused, and i feel a bit like I was brushed off. So I am wondering: am I overreacting or should I seek a second opinion?

Unfortuantely thats the state of our health care system right now.  If you dont fall into a specific category of disease which they can prescribe you medicine for then they have no idea what to do.  Initially reading the description I to think it sounds like swollen lymph nodes, although I'm not sure of the EXACT area you felt them but its a good possibility thats what it is.  The bad thing about that is lymph nodes are ONLY swollen when the immune system is fighting and infection/virus/any type of foreign invader.

The most concerning this about the description you gave is the headaches, dizziness and trouble with speech.  These are some serious symptoms which would involve cranial nerves, most of which are deep within the skull or midbrain.

There are a number of different things which could cause this and its hard to really narrow it down without knowing the exact site of the lumps you felt.  Conditions like Bells Palsy can cause the symptoms you talked about except for the double vision.  Most importantly if these are lymph nodes that you felt its most important to resolve the underlying issure which is cause them to swell.  Its possible once the swelling is gone the neurologic symptoms your experiencing might also go away.  Its not uncommon for lymph nodes to compress nerves when there swollen.  Hope this helps!

I agree with BluCrystal that you should go and seek another medical opinion on the lumps and the symptoms that you are having.

The doctor should have checked your ears and blood pressure and taken a blood test for check for any problems like anaemia, B12 deficiency and diabetes.

With you experiencing double vision from time to time, you should see an ophthalmologist to check your eyes.

Best wishes.

This gets a second, third, and fourth opinion, as needed.  It important to have a healthy brain and skull.  That's an understatement.  Please get the treatment you require, no matter how many doctors you have to see.  Blessings - Blu
