Must be IBS. . .

Apparently I am not alone in my IBS symptoms.  I have not been able to find a doctor who can diagnose my symptomatology.  After reading all of the postings on this site, it appears that IBS is my problem.  I have found that over the years (20), warm applications to the abdomen help relieve the abdominal pain.  Taking 4 stool softeners a day keep away the frequent onset at bay.  My biggest problem is dehydration from the diarrhea that ensues subsequent to the bowel obstruction.  Once the obstruction has passed the sweats and chills subside. I also sometimes also experience vomiting prior to passing the obstruction.  I have also found that if I try to sleep on my side as opposed to flat on my back, the abdominal pain is worse.  This ALWAYS happens to me at approximately 3 - 4 AM.  Hope my observations can be of some assistance to those who share my symptoms.  Dawndaly

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
The symptoms you both have can be due to any inflammatory bowel condition like IBS, Crohn’s disease or Celiac disease or gluten intolerance. You both should consult a good gastroenterologist. A number of times a gastroenterologist is able to diagnose these conditions by clinical examination and detailed medical history. At other times a few tests are conducted. Blood tests to rule out anemia and stool test to look for white blood cells. Braium meal and follow through, endoscopy etc are done to rule out GERD, Crohn’s disease etc. Irritable bowel syndrome is diagnosed by elimination of other causes. Gluten is a complex protein present in four main grains---wheat, rye, barley and oats. If you have gluten intolerance, then you probably have celiac disease or Non Celiac gluten sensitivity. There are blood tests called celiac test to detect gluten intolerance. Crohn’s disease is a difficult entity to diagnose. Along with gut symptoms skin disorders and arthritis too are commonly seen with Crohn’s. An upper GI series using barium dye is done to see the condition of small intestines. The degree of involvement of the large and small intestine may vary from person to person.  A biopsy is the most confirmatory. An elevated ESR does confirm inflammation in the body. Low protein, minerals and iron in blood are the other findings in Crohn’s which may or may not be present. A recent advancement in Crohn’s diagnosis is video capsule endoscopy.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Dear mandy.
I was reading one of your other posts, and i came across something valuable, just like me you have had an high cortisol reading, i have too.
Have you ever been tested for cushings syndrome?
Have you been tested for thyroid disease?
I was really interested when i saw you had a high cortisol reading, doctors just sweep high cortisol under the carpet, and they shouldnt.
Have you ever had youre adrenals tested,? have you ever had any skin changes?
Adrenals are two tiny little glands that sit on top of the kidneys, and can cause some serious problems,
They also can cause a list of symptoms, some of what you are discribing.
Hope this is off some help to you, as im battling at the moment with doctors about my adrenal problems, and its finding a good endocrinologist, what realises what the adrenal glands are all about.
You asked me could stress cause these symptoms, i would say when ive read about stress, there is a possibility, as stress can cause a host of symptoms too.
But yourself is the best judge, for that, you have to ask yourself do you feel stressed, do your symptoms come on greater with stress?
You are the best judge of your own body, because you live in it.
You can decide if its stress related , or through illness,
Doctors like to use the stress terminology for everything, which really gets up my nose.
Be your best advocate for that.
I wish you well, and check those adrenals.

I probably do have gluten intolerance. You know its so frustrating. I dont want to live like this and can't accomplish anything like this. I have a daughter to take care. Most days I think about ending it all. I also have other symptoms:dizzness, heart paps. muscle pain and weakness. My arms are so weak i can hardly lift them. My legs feel like jello. I dunno but i dont want to live like this anymore. You think stress can cause this? Thats what doctors always want to blame it on.

Have you both been to the gastoenterologists, for further testing, also have you both been tested for caelics and gluten intolerance, disorders.
I have been bad for many years with stomach problems, but they put my down to thyroid illness, in my eyes that is the easy way out for more testing.
I get terrible diarrhoea, followed by constipation, when the diarrhoea comes bad i have to take dioralyte otherwise i would definately be dehydrated.
As your doctor looked at chrohns disease, etc.
I have been having these problems on and off for 12 years, and its still going on,i am in limboland just like you,
Best of luck to you
