Hi Tony, the year I was off work and the smell disappeared I think the lack of stress and fear of comments had a lot to do with my recovery.  As far as the food diary goes, I was never able to pinpoint anything with any accuracy.  At one point I thought eggs were a problem but then I have eaten eggs since and no problem.  What a stupid problem to have.
I can see why people with this malady get depressed.  It just goes against everything acceptable in society.  Its not acceptable to smell like pooh all the time.
I am not sure if it was you Tony, or someone else who mentioned the site ibsgroup.org but I would recommend this site for anyone with this odour problem.  Go to the pain/gas/bloating forum.  We are all in there, all with the same problems.  But you can get some good input and ideas from the people on there.  Some of them have suffered almost their entire life.  If nothing else, it feels better to know that you are not alone in your suffering (and they are a very, very nice group of people)
One more thing.  I don't know how to search for topics on this site, I find it a bit hard to use.  The only way I keep coming back to this thread is because I have it bookmarked.  So if it reaches 50 posts, I hope I can find you guys again!
Bye for now, keep the faith...

Hi everyone.  I have been reading all your posts on uncontrollable flatulence.  I too suffer from this, have for over 10 years now.  Funny thing with mine is, when I first got it out of blue 10 years ago I felt like I was some kind of human freak.  I had all the standard tests (blood, stool, colonoscopy, breath test etc) and of course, all came back normal.  I ended up seeing a shrink because at the same time I was also under alot of stress with a marriage break up and two small children to take care of.  I had to take a year off work because of smelling bad all the time (I work in an office) and it stressed me out so bad.  During the year off I relaxed, took anti depressant medication and saw the shrink.  The smelly gas went away and I went back to work.  Other than the odd flare up my gas was under control.  Fast forward to the past couple of years...I have now started having flare ups.  This time I smell bad for a couple of weeks and then it will go away and then I will smell bad again.
Lately I have had an on going problem of smelling foul and it seems to be getting worse.
A couple of months ago I went back to the doctor for some more tests.  Again the blood, stool and breath test.  But this time they also did an anal manometry to test for anal sphincter strength and also an anal ultrasound which looks for any abnormalities in the anus.  Both tests were normal.
I have tried keeping a food diary to see if any particular food triggers the odour problem and I also track bowel movements.  I tend to have diahrea frequently but do alternate to no bowel movements at all.  I have been diagnosed with IBS which seems to be the diagnosis of last resort once everything else has been ruled out.
I also am frustrated at the social isolation, I have stopped going out with friends unless we are somewhere outdoors, I do not date anymore and I am finding going to work very difficult lately.

Well, I have rambled enough for now, just wanted to tell my story and introduce myself.  I will keep checking here to see what anyone has come up with and also offer suggestions when I can.

That sounds great. Be careful when taking anti-depessants but i trust you know what your doing. I'm waiting to receive my book also =). Sage brings up a good point, comparing notes is not a bad idea.

There was another thread that you can read to find out more Sage. http://www.medhelp.org/forums/gastro/messages/37953.html

Hi Sage, I think the background is a good question. In my case, the trigger was stress (job+grad school) accompanied of bad diet
