Why do I have a nervous feeling in my chest?

For the past few days now I have had a very nervous feeling in my chest. I don't know what is causing it. I have not reason to be nervous or scared. I am only 18 and my dad passed away 4 years ago from a heart attack so this kind of scares me... any suggestions on what to do?

It depends on what you mean by a "nervous feeling" in your chest. If it feels like your heart is fluttering, irregular, or skipping beats, then it could be related to your heart, though not in a way that is concerning for a heart attack, like your dad had. First of all, you're dad having a heart attack only increases your risk of having heart disease if he was less than 50 years old when he had heart disease. Even if you are at risk, age 18 is extremely young for coronary artery disease (the kind of heart disease that underlies heart attacks). You should practice a healthy lifestlye (don't smoke, eat well, exercise, etc) to decrease your risk of coronary artery disease in the future, but you're not at any significant risk at this age.

In terms of the nervous feeling in your chest, if it is more of a fluttering, as I described about, see your doctor about having an ECG or possibly a Holter monitor as well as an echocardiogram to look for things like valvular heart disease (specifically mitral valve prolapse).

It's probably just anxiety
listen to calming music
or watch something funny
it'll be okay :)
