It can become degenerative (get worse with time). I would talk to a chiropractor first, because that is his specialty. X-rays vary in price maybe $130? Don't get treatment without one. Proper care now is the investment in your health that many of us old folks wish we had made when our chronic problems were newer. Because it is intermittent, I wouldn't let it scare you, but you do need to act on your intuition.

That is a very compacted area of the upper cervical spine that can become painful from injury or posture. The bones of the spine can get jammed against each other or against the rim of the base of the skull. When you turn your head or get into that certain position, the bones rub or compress the nerves, and you will get pain like you described. I am an advocate of chiropractic for these kinds of symptoms. I suggest getting an x-ray of the area first to see if there is an alignment problem. If so, then an adjustment may be what you need. If the chiropractor has any doubts, you may be referred to an MD. It is important to get this problem resolved because it may cause you headaches and pain later in life. Hope this helps!
