quit smoking and heartburn

Hey,

Just over 1 month ago I gave up smoking. I was fine for the first few days but then developed a cough for about 10 days but now I have persistant heartburn every night and at times during the day something I never experienced before. Its like my throat is on fire for the past 2 weeks. Ive tried unsuccessfully to give up smoking before and this never happened. Can anyone tell me if its normal and if so how long will it last, or should i be worried and visit the doctor.

Thanks

OTC Prilosec states the warning to be taken for up to 14 days 3 times a year. For a good reason.  Stomach acid is essential for digestion, absorption of nutrients, and killing off bacteria, fungus, parasites. My mother was on nexium for almost 6 years and almost died from the serious side effects. Today she takes betaine HCL with pepsin supplements to increase stomach acid and digestive enzymes to help with with digestion and is free from severe GERD and severe LPR. Digestive enzymes are helpful for both high and low stomach acid.

If I may regress, I quit smoking on Halloween Night, October 31, 1964. I collapsed with a perforated ulcer. The doctor told me I had to quit smoking because nicotine, a drug, activates the acid pumps in my stomach lining and would irritate my ulcer.

It appears that maybe the lack of nicotine has caused some change in your stomach.

Ten years ago, I developed a second ulcer, and I have taken one OTC Prilosec a day for 10 years with no problem. Why not try an experiment and take one Prilosec or Prevacid a day for 4 days to learn whether your heartburn has stopped? The stronger pill, Nexium, has just become available OTC and may deserve your consideration. This experiment will determine whether your stomach lining might have been damaged if you take pain pills with only a sip of liquid. Aleve pain pills is very effective, but can burn a spot on your stomach lining. Each time you eat, stomach acid attacks the burned spot and gives you heartburn.
