3 year old daughter with blood in urine

About 2 weeks ago I got a call from the school nurse telling me that my 3 year old daughter smelled so bad of urine that the teacher couldn't stand to be around her. I asked her if she was wet and did she have an accident. I noticed the smell the night before and she was with me all day but not that bad. I know she didn't have an accident the day before because I was with her shopping all day and she was in a cart. I would have noticed the "spillage". So, I brought her to the dr. They did an urinalysis and it came back negative for infection but positive for trace blood in urine. They sent it out and still negative for infection but they don't know how the other could be right and said they thought it was 'contaminated' somehow. They said to wait a week and repeat it. During this time she has had really bad stomach pain attacks. She was due for the repeat on Friday but I couldn't get her in before they closed. Yesterday I brought her to the ER for SEVERE stomach pain and they didn't find anything except once again her urine...negative for infection but positive for trace blood. ER doc didn't say anything but her pediatrician said that if she started to run a fever to bring her back to the ER and to bring her to the office in a week for a repeat urinalysis.

I'm getting worried. A little over a year ago she had surgery to correct VUR and now this. Is this common to continue to "come back in a week" to repeat urinalysis over and over again? Should I call urologist and see what he suggests? She has a GI doc also should I call her? Am I worrying for nothing?

Hi, I'm dealing with a replica of your exact problem right now with my 3 year old daughter. She had the corrective surgery for VUR as well, and now ..same as your's..we went to the Pediatrician and she just called me back..she has blood in her urine and ketones, waiting on the culture for her urine to check for UTI, but seems doubtful. Seems everytime she has a hih fever and we go to the ER and they do the routine urine check, she has blood in the urine..always the same, but then the culture always comes back negative. My urologist recently had checked her and mentioned that sometimes the trace blood can be due to the child holding it, potty or poop, too often. Also she has been potty trained for the last year, and just the last 3 nights along with the tummy pains, she has wet the bed, and it smells sooo strong... I hope we both can get some answers on this. Feel free to message me, anytime.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
The most common cause of blood in urine is UTI. Since her urine sample is clear for infection and she has abdominal pain, the next possible diagnosis is stone. The stone can be anywhere in the urinary system from kidney to urethra. Bladder infections and cysts too can cause similar symptoms. Since your daughter has a history of VUR please go back to her urologist. She may need something more than a urine examination like a CT scan or a cystourethrogram.
Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
