7 yr old son started unrinating blood

My 7 yr old son was prescribed Abilify 5 mg to be taken once a day.  He started the medicine on Thursday and Saturday afternoon we were in the emergency room because he was urinating blood.  The doctor ran a urine test and blood work and said that my son didn't have a bladder infection and that it was medicine related.  He also ran some blood work and said that he did not have any kidney or liver damage.  We stopped giving him the medicine on Sunday and now he is fine.

My son told me that when he would go to the restroom he would urinate but it felt like he still needed to and nothing would come and it would hurt him.  I asked him when did this start and he said (the morning you gave me the new medicine).

What would cause him to react like this?  His neurologist said he has never heard of someone having a reaction like this to Abilify.

Any help would be appreciated.

The pieces of the puzzle maybe falling into place now.   Saturday afternoon about 20 - 30 mins before my son had blood in his urine, he had fallen off of his bike.  We asked him if he hurt himself and he said "No".

Well yesterday while collecting the urine for the urine test I noticed that his stream of urine was "crooked" (to the left).  Again last night it was doing the same thing.  So this morning I called his pediatrician and told him about the bike incident and the crooked stream of urine.  He said it sounds like he injured his penis on the inside and that it should resolve on it's own.

He is still sending up to do another urine test Friday morning just to make sure.

Thanks for responding to my posts.

He had a "Routine Chemistry" blood test done every thing  was fine on that test except for his "ALK PHOS" total it was high- 162.

He also had a "CBC" and every thing came back fine on that test too.  The only things that were flagged was  "MCV" for being low it was 81, and  "MONO" for being high it was 9.1.  His Platelet count is 219.

I am going to see if if pediatrician will refer me to a urologist because he doesn't seem very concerned.

Hi
Thanks for keeping me posted!
Since your seven year old can actually see the blood in urine, you should rule out clotting disorders including low platelet count. Gross hematuria visible to naked eye is also seen in kidney and bladder stones, cancer of kidney, sickle cell anemia and bladder infections. Apart from urine examination, your son would need some other blood tests and imaging tests and maybe cystoscopy. Also ask him to urinate in a clear bowel so that you can see the blood yourself, watch its quantity, consistency, color and whether there are clots.
Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

I took my son to his pediatrician this morning and he said he doesn't believe it is a reaction to the Abilify, he believes it is just a coincidence.  He said that hey might have a viral bladder infection.  He sent us for another urine test this morning.

The urine test that was done on Saturday showed he definitely had blood in his urine.  The test done this morning showed that his urine is clear.

This is where I am puzzled. After the urine test I sent my son to school.  A couple hours later they called to tell me that my son wanted to go home and that he was worried because had just gone to the restroom and there was still blood in his urine.

What causes a 7 yr old boy to have blood in his urine some times.  How can he have blood in his urine and then do a urine test and the results come back negative, but then a couple hours later have blood in his urine again.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
The drug (Abilify) is usually given in 10-17 years age group and in adults. Is not 7 years too early to start this drug? The drug is known to cause thrombocytopenia or decrease in platelet count. This can manifest as bleeding episodes. Do get his blood platelet count done. The drug is also reported to have self mutilation as a side effect. This could also cause blood in urine.
It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Okay well I thought my son was doing better, he just went to the restroom and urinated blood again. His urine was clear all day yesterday and today.   Why would he urinate blood just some of the times?  Does this sound like a reaction to the Abilify or could it be something else?
