Epididymitis Keeps Coming Back After 2 Rounds of Cipro

I have had epididymitis for over a month now--off and on. No painful urination or weird discharge, just pain in the testicles that shoots up into my abdomen, and swelling of the epididymis (obviously).

I was tested for STDs (even though I'm celibate), and nothing was found. I also had an ultrasound, which came back normal. My doctor suspected random (endemic?) bacteria as the cause.

I've had 2 rounds of 500mg Cipro twice a day. The first round was for 14 days, the second round was for 7. These two rounds were separated by a week.

The first round of Cipro made the pain go away, but then it returned slowly once I went off the meds. I got the second round over the phone a week later, which fixed the problem again, but only until I went off the antibiotics. Now the pain is really coming back.

I have an appointment with a urologist in a week, but I want to know what my options are ahead of time. I'm very concerned about becoming sterile or this becoming a recurrent disease. As you can imagine, I just want it gone for good.

Are there any stronger antibiotics out there that I should suggest? Also, I'd rather not have my ligaments snap-off from taking too much Cipro, so meds without those life-debilitating side effects would be awesome.

I'm 24, healthy, and active, btw.

Thank you for the help!

Hi there!

Well, recurrent epididymitis could occur due to sub-responsiveness of the bacteria to the anti-biotic or due to recurrent infection. If an infection can be located a culture and sensitivity may be advised or empirically a broad spectrum antibiotic for atleast 2-3 weeks would be advised. I would suggest discussing the situation with your treating doctor.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!
