Low Libido with High Testosterone: What to do?

I was on androgel for several years with good libido results before discontinuing due to prostate cancer.  After brachytherapy for my cancer, I am in remission, and after 2+ years resumed taking androgel.  I am on androgel again, and have high Testosterone levels (about 1000), but my libido has never recovered.  I also have had hypothyroidism, but have been taking synthroid for it for many years with no adverse impact on my libido.

Does anyone have a suggestion for what to do?  My endocrinologist and urologist have run out of ideas beyond seeing a psychiatrist, which I am dubious about, since I am certain that my problem is physiological.

Hi there!

Both high and low testosterone levels can be associated with a low libido. The gel is no typically recommended after a history of androgen dependent cancer. Aside hormonal issues, other factors that could affect libido include psychological factors, micronutrient deficiency, systemic causes etc. I would suggest an evaluation by an internist and a psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation and suggestion of an appropriate management plan.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!

Similar circumstances.  However before the prostate cancer I had a bilateral orchiectomy (Long story) so testosterone levels without androgel were near zero.  After the cancer was removed I went a year plus having PSAs checked before going on Androgel.  *Zero testosterone is horrible.   Libido didn't come back or at best not very well.   I take a small amount of Arimidex to reduce high estrogen levels which is something to check *I think.   I keep thinking there is something else missing that people who are on HRT need so if you every figure this out I would love to hear it.

I haven't been on this system for years but I see my last post and wanted to update it.   The Arimidex I was taking seems like it was the problem.  I took enough of it that it nearly zeroed my levels of estrogens.  Due to some weird problems with blood pressure I was taken off this (And other drugs) to try to figure out if one of the meds was the BP problem.  Letting my estrogen levels go up restored my sex drive.   This is just my amateur 2 cents worth (I am not a doctor) I think having too little estrogen can mess up your sex drive just as too little testosterone can.   If you have too much or too little this is where the problems seem to be.

This is correct - it sounds very odd, but it’s true that men actually need some minimum amount of estrogen to have libido & sexual function. Dropping estrogens to near zero will mess up your sexual functioning...
