Thank you all for replying to my comment/concerns regarding the stent. As per my last comment I wasn't told anything about the stent. According to Canadian medical laws, that information needed to be provided prior to going ahead with the procedure. At the moment, I am awaiting further information from the hospital I had the surgery done at and have explained recently what took place and what had not. I hope that I can find the answers I am looking for as consent is vital to communication with health officials and patients.
Again, thank you for all your responses
Well you really should of been informed of ANY possible procedure being done at that time. I was told by the nurse the first time and then a couple weeks later when they actually removed my 10 kidney stones I was told I would have another stent for the same reason I mentioned earlier. Those stents have to be changed every three months I believe or crystals form on them and cause trouble. I was only warned of the stents the day of surgery, never by the doctor. He didn't even tell me how painful it was going to be until I called after hours notifying him I was on my way to the ER. I hope you get to the bottom of this soon.
Hi there!
Technically since this would be a non-emergent procedure, an informed/ verbal or written consent would be required before or during the procedure before the decision of a stent placement is taken.
Hope this information is helpful.
Take care!
I had signed a consent form but there was no information regarding the stent. When I was about to sign it, I recapped with the nurse who brought it to me and said exactly word for word the following: The urologist will put a scope thru my penis, go up until they find the stone, laser it and remove what they can and I will pass the rest as normal and nothing else will be done. The nurse said yes, thats all they will be doing to me. Then I signed. (I saw the original urologist twice and he never mentioned anything about putting a stent into).
When I went to get the stent removed earlier this week by a second urologist, I asked the nurse if this consent form they use at the hospital are generic in wording, she said yes they are. Again, no information on the stent. My concerns are regarding lack of information. I am currently following up with the hospital on this matter so that others will have a proper decision if they opt to having a stent put in and the factors that follow having one inside your body.
You would of signed the consent before surgery at the place of surgery giving your doctor consent. If you don't remember what the consent exactly said you need to contact them for a copy. Stents are basically a given when you have kidney stones removed. If you didn't get one you would be in the ER in pain not being able to void.
Ok, I think everyone missed the point of my question. Does a urologist need to tell you they will put a stent in your body without your consent??? (That is the question).
A month later I had a CT scan and a second opinion by a different urologist and tells me the problem with all my complications is the stent that was put in during my initial operation. I was blown away that no one bothered telling me till now that I had a stent in me. My second urologist opted to removing it a few days later and I'm pain and complication free.
I believe a stent is a given when your having kidney stone procedure. Without the stent your ureter will swell up and you won't be able to urinate. I know they are awful!! I had two stents and 11 kidney stones. If you need tips on how to minimize the pain associated with the stent please let me know and I will share what I learned with you. Hope you get to feeling better soon!!
I would think that stents would be part of the procedure. When I had my stones removed, a stents was placed from my right kidney to my bladder. I had a stone blocking the ureter and the ureter needed time to heal.
I hope this helps.
