Thank you for the response i will get a DRE if my PSA doesn't go down after I'm finished with the medication.
Hi,
Thanks for writing in. I think that your doctor has suspected infection or inflammation of the prostrate, that is why he has prescribed ciprofloxacin. The treatment is right for infection. As I mentioned in my earlier post that infection or inflammation could be the cause of elevated PSA, in your case that could have palyed a role in the elevation of level of PSA.
But I would suggest that you get a DRE of the prostrate, if your symptoms persist even after the course of antibiotics.
Best.
Hi Dr Venna thank you for the reply.
My urologist said that 2 is high for my age and it should be one so he gave me Ciprofloxacin to take for 2 months. Is that alright treatment?
Regards
Hi,
How are you? The prostate gland produces a substance called PSA, or prostate specific antigen. A small amount of PSA can be found in blood, but it is mostly present in semen. A blood test is done to measure the amount of PSA. Usually PSA of less than 4 ng is considered normal. More than this level raises a suspicion of prostrate cancer.
There are several factors that can also elevate the PSA, such as age, infections, instrumentation, ejaculation and non cancerous tumors of the prostrate. Prostrate enlargement is not common in your age, but inflammation is quite common. There could be changes in the colour and consistency of the semen if there is an inflammation in the prostrate.
I would suggest that you get a DRE of the prostrate with urethral swab culture done and visit a urologist.
All the best.
