I understand that the 'poppy seed test' can be used to diagnose a bladder fistula. How do you perform the test and what, if any, are the risks (e.g are poppy seeds dangerous in large quantities?)
The poppy seed test is simple. The patient is made to eat some poppy seeds and later a urine sample is collected. If the poppy seeds are found in the urine, the test is positive. Some literature describes the test as more sensitive and specific than imaging studies, other than being cost effective. A limited quantity of poppy seeds is consumed in the test which is unlikely to be harmful.
Hope this helps.
