Prostatitis and Anxiety

I was first diagnosed with prostatitis 18 years ago when I was 20. It was the most severe case that I have had to this day. Frequent urination when I could go, pressure pain in my anus, burning sensation when urinating but my worst symptom was the feeling of having to urinate but nothing would come out. I had the complete physical rectal examanation by urologist, whatever you call the exam where they jam that camera down your penis ( UGHHHH !) and was prescribed all the anti-biotics finally ending on cipro. Well nothing worked until I was visiting my Dr and the nurse quietly told me " hey I can't tell you this but if you want to fix your problem you need to go in the bathroom and take care of buisness." I was willing to try anything so I ran home and ran to the bathroom. What I found was semen that was a dark brown color and I also found much releief after 2 months of hell. I did it for the next 3 days until my semen was clear again and I was symptom free. Now I have had a few small flares up that would last maybe a day or two but thats it until now. About two weeks ago there it was again like 18 years ago. This time masturbating has not worked and even seemed to flare up my prostate more.My semen is a darker color almost a green/brown but then its never been snow white usually a pearl color. Now some background on my health. I recently had a complete physical just 3 weeks ago and everything was fine. I have for the last 20 years suffered from Anxiety but I have been able to keep it under control. I have been stressed at work lately and went to my Dr and he prescribed me Clonopin to relax a little more. My first question is could Anxiety be the reason for my Prostatitis ? Second I usually masturbate several times a week and I have read at least a 100 times that this is good for the prostate but could it be harmful ? I mean could my masturbating too much be why I have this problem with prostatitis ? Part of me wants to masturbate everyday thinking I will fix the problem by doing this but part of me thinks this will oly make the problem worse. My grandfather died of prostate cancer and my uncle, his son, suffers from prostatitis ....What do you think Doc ? Thanks !

Hi,

As we grow older the physiology of certain functions undergoes changes, sometimes to decrease the efficiency with which those systems work. This is part of the reason why men develop prostate conditions around the time they cross 40 and get older.

Your prostate produces the fluid that constitutes the semen, though the sperms come from the testes via the epididymis. It has been reported that vigorous sexual activity and too frequent ejaculation (beyond the capacity of the prostate to produce seminal fluid) can irritate the prostate. The point is not to cease ejaculation or sexual activity. Just to tone things down and see if that brings about an improvement.

Please do not cut the ciprofloxacin dose in half!!
As the available drug amount in the body is less than optimal, the bacteria can develop resistance to the antibiotic!
The normal dose prescribed in adults is 500 mg twice daily. The irritation is a normal part of any antibiotic therapy. You can take ranitidine 150 mg or cimetidine right after food along with the ciprofloxacin as this drug does not impair absorption of the antibiotic and will stop the gastritis.

Thank you Dr. Mathews,
I have been on Clonopin for 18 years and have been off and on just depending on what my professional Dr has asked me to do. My urine samples were just fine when I had my physical. I haven't noticed any bad odor in my semen at all. I read everywhere that masturbating daily is good for the prostate but now I feel different about that opinion. What if your married or have a mate and you have sex daily is that bad for the prostate. I have gone several days without masturbating then tried it again only for the reason of clearing out the prostate fluids for hope of some pain relief. When I had this problem the first time I did not maturbate for 2 months then one day I did it and my semen was a very dark brown color then as I did it several more times it finally became a clear color and I was healed. I was hopeing for that type of cure this time but its not working or I'm trying to decide if I should continue to masturbate to see if it clears up. I mean does the prostate get sore from too much masturbating ? Can you get an infection from this as well ? I am very athletic and I excersis daily either via the gym or playing softball. Also, my Dr prescribed 250 mg of Cipro twice a day and even though I take it right after I eat it makes my stomach sick and makes me dizzy is their anything I can do for that ? I have even tried cutting the dose in half and it still makes me sick, Thanks for all your help !!

Hi,

Masturbating more than 4-5 times a week can sometimes cause some of the symptoms you are describing.

Have you noticed any odor to the semen?

Discolored semen could be an indication of underlying infection in the prostate.

You will need to see you physician and have an urinalysis done.
It would be better to cease sexual activity for a day or two completely an watch for any change in symptoms.

You should also try other measures for controlling anxiety, such as walking, etc., as clonazepam is habit-forming.

I have not had unprotected sex in over 4 years and that was with my ex-wife who after our divorce I got checked twice since she cheated on me. I have seen a uroligist and he just said that my urethra pathway is a bit small but that my prostate looked great. So could masturbating too much cause this problem ? Should I nit masturbate ? I was told that masturbating would help this help problem ! Thank you for your help !

Hi,

Have you had any unprotected sexual encounters recently?
Have you noticed any change in odor of the semen? Maybe a fishy smell?

Any alterations in bowel movement with the onset of your symptoms?

Clonazepam does not directly affect the prostate. However, it can cause changes in bowel routine, such as constipation.
Given your family history of prostate conditions, it would be best to have your symptoms evaluated by a urologist. If you have prostatitis or any prostate enlargement, you will be treated accordingly.
Medications specific for the prostate gland will be prescribed for relief of your symptoms.

Stress is also a factor that predisposes one to prostatitis. Bring about changes in your life style to relieve stress and anxiety.

You can also do the following to help relieve your symptoms:
Drink at least 2000 ml water per day.
Start taking ascorbic acid 1000mg per day.
Limit sexual activity to 3-4 times a week.
Take tylenol for the pain every 4-6 hours, but do not continue it, without seeing a doctor, for more than 3 days.
Sit in a hot bath for 10-15 min per day; twice if possible.

Do keep us posted with your doubts and progress.
regards
