Am I Vitamin D Deficient?

I am a 47-year old female.  As a result of several years of marked fatigue and muscle aches, my Vitamin D level was checked.  My doctor said that my results were "a little low" but after researching, I am questioning what that exactly means.  Here are my results from my blood test:

Vitamin D, 25 OH, D2 = results were <4 ng/mL

Vitamin D, 25 OH, D3 = results were 27 ng/mL

Vitamin D, 25 OH, Total = results were 27 ng/mL

Can someone please break this down for me?  After researching myself, it seems that I a severely deficient at <4?  I am confused.  Thanks for any help!

Julie

Generally 'normal' levels of Vitamin D3 in the body would be above 32 ng/mL.

I wouldn't pay attention to Vitamin D2 (since its a synthetic vitamin with little to no use of us).
Human body makes use of Vitamin D3 however, and as Julie0630 stated, the Vitamin D council suggests a level of 50 - 80 ng/mL (though, 100 ng/mL seems to be an indication of a much more potent health and immune system in general).

At any rate, if you want to raise your Vitamin D levels, then I would suggest you supplement with at least Vitamin D3 at 10 000 IU daily (maybe 20 000 IU daily for the first 30 days, and after that, you can lower the dose to 10 000 IU daily).

As for the issues you mentioned (fatigue and muscle aches)... they COULD be connected to lower Vitamin D levels, but those could be connected to other things as well.
A LOT of the issues inside the Human body are correlated with low Vitamin D, but as we understand in science, evidence is not proof and correlation is not proof of causation.
That said, the Human body seems to utilize Vitamin D for a wide range of things (including maintenance, self-repair, higher immunity, etc.), so its definitely possible those things are connected.

But as I said, if you want to raise your Vitamin D levels, then I suggest dosing with at least 10 000 IU of Vitamin D3 on a daily basis.

It is difficult to diagnose all this vitamin D deficiency like this. Vitamin D is necessary for strong bones but it is very common to have lack of Vitamin D. Tiredness, pain, ache are the very common symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency. If you have symptoms like this than you can think that you are Vitamin D deficient.

For basic bone protection and optimum calcium absorption you need at least 32 ng/mL of vitamin D (25 OH D3). The vitamin D council recommend an optimal vitamin D level of 50 - 80ng/mL.  An undetectable level of D2 is normal. Vitamin D2 would show up detectable if you are taking vitamin D2.

I also don't know but I would suggest for your aches and pains you take vitamin D 2000 IU, magnesium 500 IU in the morning and calcium 500 mg in the evening.

Decrease your sugar and increase vegetable intake as doing this will reduce inflammation.

Do exercise.  Pay attention to posture and make sure you are not holding tension in your jaw.  Make faces and thrust your tongue out and see if it loosens up your face.

Hi Julie,  reading the results, I don't know. But, vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin.  Try getting some time outdoors everyday.   Pamela
