The biggest thing I always had help me was by using an app such as "myfitnesspal". I found that if I could see what I ate and see in a scale how it matches up to the exercise I did that day really kicked me in the butt. If I didn't track I fell to nibbling.
Try not to look at it as a "diet". You should be making actual lifestyle changes that you can stick with over the long term. Often making small changes (like switching from soda to water) are better than a strict diet that's not sustainable.
