If you can't lose weight with diet and exercise, without resorting to things like Optifast, I'd have to wonder if your thyroid hormone levels are optimal, or if you're taking other medications that cause weight gain/inability to lose.
I've had a horrible time losing weight since I became hypo, but my thyroid levels have never been allowed to be optimal either because I have a very low TSH, which freaks out all my doctors. My endo has now started allowing me to increase my medication to allow my thyroid hormone levels to come up where I need them and I've finally gotten to a point where, with diet and exercise, I'm able to lose weight without a lot of extra supplements, shakes, etc.
I don't Optifast is something that can be maintained, long term and I wonder if you can keep the weight off once you stop the program, without optimal thyroid hormones.
I also have insulin resistance, which make weight loss more difficult so I have to watch, very carefully, what carbs I eat. In addition to that, I have to pay close attention to medications that are prescribed to make sure weight gain isn't a side effect.
Unfortunately the older we get, the harder it is to lose weight. I also am
hypothyroid and could not lose weight.
check out Optifast, a medical monitored weight loss program.
I am now losing weight and feeling great !!!!!
God bless you always !!!!!
You're not losing weight, because you're building muscle. You should take your measurements instead of relying on the scale. Muscle is denser (molecules are packed tighter) than fat, so a pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat, so your body could be getting smaller even though it's not getting lighter.
Additionally, as a diabetic, almost all of your carbs should be the complex type (fiber), such as those found in vegetables, whole grains, etc, because those are the ones that are broken down slowly so your blood sugar doesn't spike like it does with simple carbs such as those found in fruit, sugary or processed foods like white bread, pasta, white rice, etc.
Whenever you eat something that spikes your blood sugar, it affects your insulin levels. Insulin is called the fat storage hormone and whatever food that's not used for energy is shuttled into fat cells and stored for later use.
Make sure you change up your diet and exercise so your body doesn't get used to it. If you do the same things every day and your body gets used to, that's just becomes normal routine.
Last, but not least, you might want to have your doctor do some simple blood tests to make sure you don't have hypothyroidism, along with that Type 2 Diabetes. Hypothyroidism is a number one cause of inability to lose weight. The tests you need are thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4, along with the pituitary hormone, TSH. Don't let your doctor get by with just testing TSH.
It sounds like you are getting healthier even if you are not losing the pounds. Many thing can contribute to that including medication, age, diabetes itself...forgive yourself for not losing weight and keep working hard to maintain your health as a whole.
Sorry about the typos! !!
A high protein diet is the key...I work for a surgeon and he recommends 60 g of protein minimum a say...protein shakes like premier protein provide 30 g and less than 2 g sugar...replace than women meals with than those and have any protein (neat, poultry, fish, tofu) with salad or green vegetable. ...don't give up!!!
