When I decided to completely change my way of eating in hopes to lose weight, a friend recommended a book called Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno. I read it nonstop and finished it in a day. I learned so much and it made me want to change.
I completely understand the nighttime eating! I still do it, sometimes :) The solution is to come up with good alternatives to junk. For example, cook popcorn on the stove in coconut oil and sprinkle cinnamon on it. Coconut is a healthy fat and cinnamon boosts your metabolism. Popcorn is a whole grain that gives you fiber. You can also air pop the popcorn if you'd rather. If you need something sweet, try making an all fruit smoothie. You can buy no sugar added frozen fruit anywhere but WalMart is the cheapest I've found. Just add a little 100% juice apple juice and a hunk of ripe frozen banana for sweetness. That's it! Yum! And so filling!
Good luck! :)
i was the same way until i decided to do things my way ..the way i knew i could actually achieve my goals.. and throw everything ive read out the door .... well not everything healthy eating is key but if you are trying to do something like not eat at night when you know thats your favorite time to eat your just setting yourself up for disappointment. so what i decided was im going to do my little meals all day and then eat my dinner at 8 a healthy dinner of course .my kids go to bed at 8 so i can relax and enjoy it . i go to bed around 11 ,1130 so i still had time before i went to sleep... i no longer attack the kitchen at night . and i dont deprive myself if i want something bad enough i will get it ... i mean what a chipotle burritto in the midst of a whole week of healthy eating .
sorry that last comment was meant to you my mistake
Hey KTowne!
I'm the same, I always get the munchies at night... I agree with cuzimdmom about the popcorn, its a great idea and yummy!! I also find that if I brush my teeth after dinner or the popcorn snack I wont want to eat anything because my mouth feel sonice and clean :)
I hope you can manage to get a hold of your nightly munchies!!! :)
thank you ladies, these are very helpful! I'm definitely going to try them all, hopefully this madness ends soon, I can't force myself to eat healthy but I DO force myself to exercise, and hopefully changing one thing at a time I can change my diet!
When you get the urge to eat, the first thing you need to determine is if you are really hungry for food, or if you're bored, lonely, etc. Usually, when we're craving simple carbs, we aren't really hungry for food; we need something else. Try doing some type of activity for a while to see if it takes your mind off food. If not, have something with fruit, cinnamon, a "good" fat, such as an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter, etc.
The longer you can go without eating the simple carbs, the easier it will be, but I'm a firm believer that we should be able to eat anything in moderation, if we plan for it.
I really do start off thinking.. I'm NOT hungry.. I'm bored, but then I'll think of all the food I could be eating and it makes me hungry, and if i try to do something to distract myself I find myself not being able to stop thinking about it haha.. it's a vicious cycle. I really need to just stop bringing unhealthy things in the house for my husband and son.. they need to be eating healthier as well anyway. time for some family changes.
You're right, that you should probably stop bringing unhealthy things home, since the rest of the family should be eating healthy, as well. BUT, I can't really talk, because I have the same problem. My husband is almost 6' tall and very thin, so he can eat anything he wants and doesn't gain weight. I, on the other hand, am only 5' tall and all I have to do look at food and I gain.
I've just determined that certain things are "off limits" for me, so I try to convince myself that I really don't want those foods anyway, or I'll convince myself that those foods are my husband's and if I eat them, there won't be any when he wants them.... When I do that, I'll usually go for something healthier.
i'm 4'11 and my husband is 6'1 haha..unfair!!
Hi. My name is Lisa. I am 5'2''. In October of last year, I was 165 lbs. Now, I am 133 lbs. And I still eat chocolate every night. I started using an herbal supplement called Real Dose. I take 1 capsule a day with water 30 minutes before breakfast. That's it. It did not interact with any of my medicines. I also lost body fat which is more important than how much you weigh. Check out this website and see a video on why you can do everything right and still not lose weight. http://www.realdose.com/about-us/our-mission/. I am not a sales person, just a happy customer. :0)
I am having the same issue. I never had this problem until I became hyporthyroid, hypoglycemic and went into menopause. Now, I can go all day without eating (I know unhealthy, but to prove my point), but around ten p.m. I am having massive cravings. They can't be the typical anything will do cravings either, nooooo it is carbs and sweets!!! I am trying to fight it now after a huge rapid weight gain, but it is still so hard every single night!
If you were eating throughout the day, it's quite likely that you wouldn't get these late night cravings. Hypoglycemic episodes are caused by not eating on a regular basis, which keeps blood sugar levels steady, if you're eating the right foods.
You should also make sure your thyroid hormone levels are right for YOU, not simply "in range" as so many doctors like to leave it. You should also be getting tested for the actual thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4, not just TSH, which is actually a pituitary hormone.
The fast weight gain indicates that your thyroid levels are not optimal.
