Weight gain in summer normal?

Hi.

I've been depressed and confused about my weight lately. I was on a strict diet before.  I stopped the shakes.  I've been eating healthy and exercising the past year. I've managed to keep my weight between 110 and 113.

Average for me for my height is between 110 and 120.

When I was recovering from surgery, I wasn't walking much. My weight stayed the same. Now I'm moving around more and walking more. I gained 5 lbs.

What's going on? Is it the weather? I remember being told last summer the heat makes us retain water. I gained a few pounds last summer too but lost it. I don't know what I'm doing differently. I'm at 116. Maybe I'm not drinking enough water?  Will I lose this weight again?...  I hope.  Thanks.

It can be for me.. with the activity I am hungry more.... and I love BBQ's!!!!!! - so I know I can have some things happen if I don't behave. Plus a margarita or two on a hot day doesn't help... Oh-Vey!!! the calories....  and ice cream!

Weight Management - Live style eating is what helps alot all year long....

I agree that a 5 lb gain is not much to worry about unless you continue to gain at a steady pace.........

You said you "stopped the shakes" -- does that mean that your strict diet consisted of some type of shake?  Quite often if we go on "strict diets", we gain weight if we go off the "diet".   The best way to maintain weight is to calculate the necessary number of calories you need per day, then incorporate healthy eating/exercise to develop a lifestyle that you can stay with over the long term.

A lot of us retain more fluid in the summer, so we do gain weight.  It also depends on what you are eating.  If you are eating a lot of high fat, high sugar foods, you could be headed for trouble.

You might try implementing the food diary here on Med Help.  You can track your food intake throughout the day and it will tally the calories/nutrient value of what you ate/drank to let you know if there are areas that you might need to cut back on (fat or simple carbs) or areas that you might need to increase (protein, fiber, dairy).

The time of day you are weighing also has a bearing.  It's recommended that you weigh first thing in the morning, after you've gone to the bathroom, but before you eat or drink.  Keep in mind that your weight depends on a lot of factors, including undigested food in your stomach, etc.

Maybe you are moving your body less during the summer? You can always lose weight by staying away from fattening foods and exercising. But a 5 lb gain is nothing to worry about at all.
