I agree completely.
Sparkpeople is an excellent, free resource with very active communities. The focus is on healthy eating, and not fad dieting.
And of course, Weight Watchers. Yes, it costs money. But aren't we all worth an investment? Whether its joining WW, or just eating healthier, there are bound to be some costs. But look at the big picture--we're worth it!
Well the simple answer is to avoid refined sugars and starches. Eat whole grain breads and pastas, fresh vegies when you can get them and frozen (with as little processing as possible) when you can't.
Try to eat good fats (olive oils, avocado, cashews, almonds are good sources among others).... fresh fruit or lite canned fruit. Try to find things with as little sugar as possible. Some of the newer yogurts with fiber are really good, but again, watch the sugars.
Eat good quality, low fat meats such as chicken without skin, turkey, pork, red meats with little fat...
Check out the weight watchers site or sparkpeople.com for more info. Weight watchers is a program that is really good, sparkpeople is a free website that has some really good info, too.
Drink your water, watch your salt, take a good multi-vitamin....
And IF you have to have "snacks" try to eat the 100 cal stuff (and only 1 bag...not the entire box). Some of those snacks are too good, so I have to stay away.
As for stuff for particular medical issues.... I'm not sure if there are any good suggestions other than what I've laid out above. My mom has had thyroid issues for many years now and sticks with weight watchers type of diets.
