I agree that artificial sweeteners don't make you fat, directly, but they can cause you to crave more sweets.
Best to use Stevia for sweetening. Stevia comes from the sweet leaf plant and is actually sweeter than sugar, but it won't spike blood sugar levels, like sugar does and it has no calories. Many grocery stores are now carrying Stevia, usually, in the sugar aisle.

Most artificial sweetners are not good for you. They contain chemicals.
Sugar in small amounts is much healthier. Many types of diet sodas
contain aspartame which is very bad for you. Diet sodas also make you
want to eat more sugary type treats. Do they make you fat?
Well, not directly,but they can contribute to weight gain by making you
want to eat more food. Personally, I've given up all types of sodas,
even gingerale which used to be one of my favorite sodas. I drink a lot
of water instead of pop. Some fruit juices , coffee and tea. That's it.
