questions about the prescription Topamax

I was in a bad car accident back in April and broke my back.I had to have metal rods and screws put in my back. In the past few months I haven't been able to do any exercising (besides physical therapy which I start next week) or just alot of simple moving around. I wish I could but with a healing broken back its hard to do much of anything which means I have gained some weight. I am afraid that I will gain alot of weight and I really don't want to do that and put anymore stress on my back. Please if someone could answer my questions that would be great. I have a few questions; 1) need to know if Topamax, that my doctor prescribed to me for weight loss will really make me lose weight, 2) How long will it take to start losing the weight, 3) does topamax require you to do alot of exercise in order for it to work? 4) what are the side effects of topamax? If anyone can answer this I would be truly grateful! Thank you all for reading and have a blessed day!

My 4yr old son has seizures and he is on Topamax but I never heard it to be a weight loss pill. He eats very well and too much actually, It doesn't take his appetite away from him. You might want to look more into to that.

Hi!

To be very honest, Topamax or topimerate was approved by FDA as an anti-epilepsy drug. It has not been approved for weight loss. Weight loss is a serious side effect of this drug, and hence is often being used off label to help people lose weight. Trial using this drug for weight loss had to be discontinued due to side effects which could become serious such as dizziness, ataxia, vomiting, diarrhea, mood disorders, memory loss, difficulty in concentrating, anemia, dyspnea, loss of libido, and bladder problems.
Personally, I would not recommend you to use these pills. You can learn exercises which you can do even with your back problem. Also the diet should contain more of green leafy vegetables, fruits and protein and less of spaghetti, potato etc.  I suggest you eat frequent small meals and stop counting calories. It is best to eat lots of fruits and non-starchy green veggies, go slow on fats, eat carbohydrates in moderation and increase your protein intake (lean cuts, whites of eggs etc). Drink plenty of water and non fattening fluids such as clear soups etc. Look for hidden calories in salads and soups and avoid them (eg: cheese, butter, dressings etc).
Please re-consider your decision regarding these pills. Take care!
