Bleeding 12 years after hysterectomy

What could be the possible reasons for vaginal bleeding when a woman has not had her uterus or cervix for nearly 12 years? In 1994, I had a total hysterectomy (removal of my uterus, cervix, & one ovary). My cervix was removed because of pre-cancerous tissues. I began experiencing a vaginal discharge in Nov. 2005 after recommencing sexual relations after abstaining for six years.  Also in Nov. 2005 I noticed old blood coming from the vaginal area (it was brown) and a slight smell.  I thought maybe the sex was too hard. I was checked in December 2005 by my general practitioner for STDs and HIV.  All the rest results came back normal and/or negative.  The smell and discharge decreased; almost faded totally away.  But now in January 2006, although I have not had intercourse since November 2005, I began smelling the smell again and the discharge has increased.  It has changed in its look and consistency.  It has been white, milky, but lately it has been somewhat watery.  Recently I had a rush discharge where I had to run to the restroom. There was blood on my dress.  The blood is pink.  I went to my primary care physician who said I had a bladder infection because she thought I was bleeding from my urine are and she prescribed an antibiotic.  She did not do a pap smear.  I went to a different doctor later that day and she did a pap smear.  She confirmed that I was actually bleeding from the vaginal area, more specifcally I believe she said from my vaginal cuff.  I am nervously and anxiously awaiting the results.  What are possibilities?

I understand what you are saying. NO ONE has responded to why they were bleeding. You would think at least one would have responded. I think it just isn't very nice to come here for help but then completely forget about all the women who are scared to death about their bleeding. Is there one person who could respond to how things turned out. Did everyone die? I am just joking about the dying bit. But it really concerns me. I am having the same thing right now and I refuse to go to the doctor. I have chosen to ignor it. I have depression and would rather die than deal with any cancer issues. I couldn't handle that.
Well thanks for all you women who came here for help and support but forget about the others who are scared to death..If only we could hear from one person who was told it was nothing to be concerned about. I hope everyone is well and happy, it would just be nice to know what you found out..

I had a total hysterectomy because of uterine cancer in July 2012.
Last night I experienced vaginal bleeding, with the added symptom of frequent urges to urinate.  While urinating, just a bit, pressure within my body in that area gave a very strange sensation which was not enjoyable at all.  It was then I saw the first blood stain on the tissue as I flushed.  After checking again, I wore protection.  The blood and urges to urine lasted through the night.  I phoned the Health Direct Line for the A.C.T. and triage with a nurse, who connected me with a physician..  His advice was to go to ER if the bleeding had not relented by morning, and definitely confer with my doctor.
By two in the morning, after sitting up on the NET looking for answers, the urges relented.  The physician said to drink alkaline water to help with that.
I did take iPhone images of the emissions and swabs for the docotr to see.  Emailed a notice to each physician with the pictures, and am waiting to hear from them Tuesday, since this is Easter weekend, and Monday is a holiday here.  My advice is to be clinical about your attitude.  Meaning try to give the doctors the details they need to evaluate how urgent this is.  Take the lead on notifying them, and request a call A.S.A.P.  if you get a fever, or feel faint, have any chest pressure, or abdominal pain, or are diabetic; call a 24 hour help line, or go to an Emergency Room for evaluation.

Hi Everyone,
I had a total hysterectomy in 1981 and never had problems with sex or otherwise until a year ago.  I stopped using premarin and estrogen vagina cream over ten years ago.  Last year when I was 55 yrs. I met someone and we were intimate after going 5 years without sex.   For the first time in over 30 years after my total hysterectomy, I bleed HEAVILY for over 14 hours with large blood clots. I saw my gynecologist and had an ultrasound internally.  I was diagnosed with vaginal atrophy and my vagina has shortened by approx. 1 ".  I was put on vagifem  2xs a week.  I also requested to be put back on premarin .625 mg.  It's been a few months now and I am definitely feeling my vagina walls becoming more full.  I am using a dialator 2xs a week and gently stretching internally.  I have also started treatment with a pelvic floor physiotherapist using myofascial release technique.  Please don't get discouraged and keep searching for solutions.  Vagina atrophy can be reversed.  Also if you don't have a partner and are not sexually active you should be using a dialator at least 2xs a week. PLEASE  come back and post followups, we need to share our results as there is little information in the medical field.   Hope this helps someone.

I got the same answer and cream from my OBGYN and as long as I use it it helps.  She assured me that there was nothing wrong just associated with age and dryness.  Hope this helps.  BTW I'm 66 and had the hysterectomy at age 42.

Hi, have just read these comments and have found some of them reassuring.  Had a total hysterectomy in 1997 and was on HRT since then.  Gradually stopped stopped taking it recently as now 54years old and thought it was time :-). Today experienced brownish stains in underwear and will be going to Drs tomorrow.  Seems strange that this has happened now that I've stopped taking the HRT so will not be surprised if it is the VA. Will post an update when I know the outcome.
