Bleeding to death

Okay, this is my first post here so let me give some back ground information on myself. I am 25 years old have had regular periods since i was 12 but they were never longer than three or four days and NEVER heavy. Last August (8/08/07) I had gastric bypass surgery, since then I have lost 140 pounds. My periods never changed, they continued to be the normal light three to four day periods i was used to. Then last month I was sure I was preg. I was three weeks late with my period, exhausted all the time, sick in my stomach everytime i ate anything and exceedingly emotional(think that had everything to do with my boyfriend though). I havent been on birth control since just before my surgery but we have been being very careful when we had sex. Still everything I was seeing was pointing to being preg. On Friday (4/18) I started spotting, not enough to need a tampon or even a pad, it only lasted about 12 hours then was gone. That Sunday I told him that I thought i might be preg, we took two home preg test(both came back neg) and I called my OBGYN on Monday and made an appointment for Tuesday. Tuesday morning i was starting to spot again, nothin major just a little spotting. The preg test @ my Doc's came back neg as well. He put me on the Nuvaring birth control. He told me to start it that night, so I did. My period started the next day, it was a little heavier than normal but i was not really concerned about it. I am now three weeks into this danged period, I am using both a super-plus tampon and a pad every two hours, the worst cramps I have ever had and am passin clotts that range in size from tiny to the size of a silver dollar. Any ideas or suggestions????

Okay, first let me specify that the really heavy bleeding and the passing of blood clots didnt really start until the last week of my period. I have called my OBGYN and talked to his nurse again. Got the same song and dance about it being just because of my starting on the bc and to just give it a couple months to regulate to where it is should be. I explained the amount of blood and blood clots that i have been passing and about how bad my cramps have been, she didnt seemed to concerned. I do have an appointment Wednesday morning to go back and see the Doc. I am on my week off from the ring, so this is the week I am suposed to have my period. Came off the ring on Tuesday, the cramps stopped by Friday and the bleeding had stopped by Sunday morning. As far as the  being sick on my stomach, that has stopped as well, for the most part. I am concerned because I am suposed to go back on the ring on Tuesday night and am afraid it is gonna bring my period back.
I talked to one of my ER Doc buddies, she was really cool about it, they pulled a bunch of labs and even did an ultrasound( i know i need some more indeth tests). All my labs came back normal and the ultrasound didnt show anything.
I called my GI Doc in Birmingham, told him everything that is going on, I have an appointment with him Friday.

I also totally agree, you should not have waiting this long, but I don't think you realized what too much blood would be. Someone should have told you. If you are soaking a pad an hour (not including the tampon), that is too much blood.

The doctor should have checked her hormone levels if they thought her period didn't start because of a hormonal problem. They should not have just assumed it. That is what happened here and why her doctor gave her a type of birth control to bring on her period. If a doctor were to just assume this and didn't feel like taking the time to do the tests they needed to do, and it turned out they were wrong and she had been pregnant or had a tumor or some other type of internal damage had stopped her period, it could cause life threatening bleeding.

You really need to see someone asap, that amount of blood is not normal. I don't believe that you gyn used poor judgement, your test came back neg and you did have some spotting. My gyn had me start the ring as soon as he wrote the prescription. BUT that being said after a few days of that heavy bleeding you should've went to the Dr, not weeks after

Actually, thinking about it, you really need to go to the ER. This is not something to play around with, you very well may be bleedingto death. That is way too much blood to be passing. Please take this seriously. That GYN didn't do what he should have for you.

This does not sound right at all. He should not have given you the Nuva ring to bring on your peroid even though he didn't know what caused your peroid to stop in the first place. It sounds to me like something could be wrong that stopped your peroid. You need to know what stopped it. Seriously under weight woman may stop having a perod, when this happens, the doctor really shouldn't try to force it to come. He should be looking at all the reasons why it could have happened. I would want to have the inside of my uterus looked at, I would want to have blood tests for everything that could have started it, from diabetes, to hormone levels to something being wrong with the gastic bypass surgery you had. It alarms me that you were complaining about being sick to your stomach and this hasn't been investigated. I would see your GI doctor right away.
