Brown discharge/blood 1 week before period but not pregnant?

I had some brown discharge/blood a week or so before my next period but I'm not pregnant. What does this mean? Can anyone help??? Thanks x

Spotting can happen.  Hormones out of sync will cause this.  Brown spotting is old blood.  Typically nothing to worry about, many women do have some brown spotting before their cycle and right after. If it continues or you are worried, please see your doctor.   good luck
