Swollen gums before period??

Woke up the past two mornings with VERY swollen gums. I couldn't even eat a banana this morning! Last month my period starting changing a bit from how it's been in the past, I had severe cramps. I went to the doctor and they said everything is fine with me and that periods can change. So taking Aleve helped with that last month. Can this be related to my period too? I've never had gum problems in the past and have heard it can happen before/during your cycle.
