Surgery Length

Does anyone know how long you are in the operating room when having a laproscopic surgery to remove an ovarian cyst? I mean if there are any complications. Thanks for any insight you may give me.

Yes, I had the same problem. No one mentioned that would happen after the surgery. The spotting and streaking went on for a couple weeks. Still, do take it easy for the first week. You're going to be sore anyway which will slow you down. But if you're like me, you want to get up and do things after awhile. Just take care of yourself and let your body heal. I figured by the time the stitches came out (mine were dissolvable but I tugged and wiggled them out at one week) I figured I was ready to get back to normal activities.

So you had just the laparoscopy? Good. You'll heal so much quicker. It usually takes a week for the pathology report though. If your doctor thought things looked good while in there then most likely the report will be good too.

Ireneo I just wanted to say thank you for all your help and support. Surgery went well, They removed the cyst, tube and the ovary. I am thankful that it was laproscopic and laporotomy. Now I do have a quick question for you. The Dr's office is suppsoe tocall me today to follow-up on the surgery but I was hoping to have an answer for this before.... Are you suppost o have vaginal bleeding after this procedure> I have not had but very and I mean very little. And I could still be wearing the pad that was put on me at the hospital because of it. It look like old brown dry blood. I am sorry to be asking you this but you have seem to have been the only one answering my questions. Now I am concerned that if you should be bleeding that I am having internal bleeding. ...Just being papnoid is all.
Thanks..

Yes, they do hook you up to an IV. It's not only for fluids but for any medications that might be needed along the way. Getting the IV was always the worst part for me because my veins are so small. This last time I warned them about the trouble others have had. They were great. They did the hot packs, then gave me a tiny shot in the area for the IV. When they had to put the big needle in, I didn't feel a thing. I was so happy then I didn't care what came next. I told the nurse she really made my day.

Adhesions may slow things down for the doctors. But they've been through that before and will gently work their way through them. That is a generous cyst you have but perhaps they will still be able to wiggle it out. I read of one person that had the laparoscopy done but one incision was slightly larger than the others. It will just be a wait and see situation. No fun but once you're healed up, you'll feel better. Keep me posted and I'll be thinking of you on Wed.

I went to the Dr. on friday for my pre-op and he said the surrgery would last 1 1/2 hr to 2 hr. Does anyone know if they will give me IV fluids before the surgery or will they wait till I am in the O.R.? I know these seem like silly questions but I am getting a little nervouse since surgery is on Wed.

ireneo I would like to thank you for your reply. You also replied to my other post about finding my cyst. I too have a large cyst the measurements for the cyst are as follows: 12cm x 5cm x 11.5cm. I also have fibroids on utrus. The nurse in Dr's office believes it is a complex cyst based on ultrasound. I also have endometriosus as if the cyst was not enough. I have had endo for sometime now. I had prior surgery in 98 to unblock tubes so I could get pregnant with my son, also have had 2 c-sections, so I know I have adhesion in my stomach. That is why I was wondering about the time in the O.R.

Thanks

It depends on the size of the cyst and whether they find any other lesions in there. I had a 10 cm simple cyst plus ovary and tube removed recently. It didn't take long at all, maybe a couple of hours. All totaled, I was in the hospital about 7 hours. Not bad at all.

As for complications, it can range from a little extra bleeding to finding cancer and having to do an open incision for a full hysterectomy and other stuff. In that case a person could be in the hospital for a few days.  That's not likely since at least 95% of ovarian cysts are benign.

I have some heart problems too but I came through the surgery without a single problem. And laparoscopy means easy recovery. I was back to normal within the week.
