I've had my period for a month and...

I have had my period for about a month now, I had been on birth control however this has happened a few times before when I wasn't on birth control. I went to the doctor at the walk in clinic last week (in Canada there is a doctor shortage and a lot of people, such as myself, do not have family doctors and rely on the walk in clinics). The doctor took me off my birth control, took a pregnancy test (which came out negative) and put me on provera to make my period stop. However the provera doesn't seem to be working. Is there any other steps the doctor will be able to take? I've been taking the prover for 4 days now.

I am going to go back and ask for a referral to a ob-gyn and to be tested for hypothryoidism because it runs in my family and I display many of the other symptoms as well. But since it is the walk in clinic and the doctors aren't always the most thorough I like to go in somewhat informed about what is going on. Should I ask for anything else?

The doctor also told me to take iron supplements for the anemia I was suffering due to loss of blood.

The birth control I had been taking was the same birth control I had been on for several years previously with no problems, I stopped taking birth control about a year and a half ago when I split from a long time partner and I only started taking birth control again about 3 months ago. However in the time I hadn't been taking birth control I experienced a few prolonged periods as well. I am 26, and it is only recently in the past 7 months that I have been experiencing menorrhagia... In the past my periods have always been medium to light and never had lasted more then 5 or 6 days, I'd always been regular. Which is why this worries me.

Symptoms that I think may indicate hypothyroidism are:
-Cold intolerance.
-Dry puffy skin, especially on the face and hands.
-Muscle cramps, joint pains often in my hands and legs...
-Thin brittle hair (My hair used to be strong and thick)
-Thinning of the outer third of my eyebrows
-Inattentiveness (I have been diagnosed with ADHD and do take Ritalin however)
-Mood swings
-I suffer from hyosmia, in that I have a very weak sense of smell.
-Water retention

I am attempting to get funding for a free mirena iud, however I'd like to figure this matter out first. I am mainly worried about my fertility, I haven't had any children yet but I'd like to eventually in my 30s..

Maybe having a d n c will help... just getting the uterus scrapped then birth control to reregulate your menstrual cycle...  What symptoms are you having that u might think you have hypothryoidism???
