Hi there and welcome.  You've been married for three years and just now had sex for the first time.  Wowie.  I'm not really sure of the over exertion discussion and not having sex with your spouse but am glad you are on the right track now as this is an important part of being married and a real couple.

As for having a baby, here is some info for you.  Day one of your cycle is the first day of your period.  You begin counting there.  On day 10 of your cycle, you begin having sex and you do so every other day for the next 10 days or longer if your cycle is longer than average.  The last day of your cycle is the day before your next period starts (as determined when the period actually begins).  You ovulate for a 24 hour period usually mid cycle but sperm can live for a few days within you.

You can take a shower after sex and it shouldn't affect conception.  The sperm is inside and the majority of it stays there and can do so for days even with you taking regular showers and baths.  Some women lay on their backs and elevate their feet when trying to get pregnant but there is no proof that helps.  If you choose to do that, 15 minutes to a half hour should suffice.

Good luck and happy baby making.  my best tip for conceiving a baby is to make it a fun experience between you and your mate.  peace
