Hidden ovary

I just had a US and Trans vaginal US today and I am completely confused.  I had a hysterectomy in 1997.  My left ovary was left in place.  In 2002 my doctor said since my pap smears had come back normal for 5 years that I didn't need one any more.  However, she did not tell me or ever suggest that I needed a pelvic exam.  I just recently found out that my grandmother had ovarian cancer.  I found this out after describing all the problems I was having to my mother.  When I was 19 I had pre-cancerous cells of my cervix.  However, that is not why I had the hysterectomy.

She of course was amazed that I had not had an exame for the last 7 years.  Made an appt and had an the ultrasound done today.  The tech said I had too much bowel in the way, and that she could not see the ovary.  She also said that "if the ovary was enlarged, it would be pushing things out of the way.  So i don't think you have anything to worry about."  After reading some of the posts on here I find that not to be true.  Some of you have had a tumor after the US not showing the ovary.

My dr. should have the report tomorrow.  Should another test be done?  I do have a lot of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, and I'm a little freaked out.  I'm I worring for nothing?  Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I'm sorry I'm not helpful with the "hidden" ovary, however a few things popped out at me regarding some other issues.. First, I know that the Dr's are now saying that we don't need pap tests after negative readings for a few years. (I thought it was 2 years with negative test results). However, I don't think it meant to never need one again. I've heard of patients that discontinued the pap tests only later to be dx. with cervical cancer.

The CA-125 unfortunately won't give you any definitive answers. It isn't really reliable in premenopausal women. There are too many things that can throw the test results off, such as endometriosis and even pregnancy. However, once the TVUS results come back your Dr. may decide to have you get that CA-125 because of the family history. There are, sadly, women on this forum with ovca that always had lower numbers and those that have high numbers that  do not have ovca. The American Cancer Society doesn't recommend it as a screening tool.

And lastly.... The tech had no business saying anything to you at all regarding her findings. They are not supposed to voice an opinion or go into any sort of detail about the procedure. The Dr. will receive the report and go over it with you. .Please let us know what you find out.. Good luck and try not to worry

Waiting for results can be so hard and anxiety producing. The final results will be determined by the radiologist's reading. Given your family history and your symptoms, it may be appropriate to ask for a CA 125 blood test. Be sure to let your doctor know your concerns and to push for a definitive US result even if it means repeating it in the near future. Please keep us posted!
