how long do I need to be on birth control before I can have sex without a condom?

I started using OrthoTri-Cyclen birth control 3 weeks ago, and recently my boyfriend and I had sex without a condom? While we had sex he ejaculated inside of me. Am I protected from getting pregnant? Has my birth control kicked in yet?

I don't want you to freak, but I was told by my gyno when I started OrthoTri-Cyclen Lo that they were not effective until after the first month and to use a back-up method.
