Tylenol, Advil, Midol, etc. are all options as far as pain meds go.  Some people find one works better than the other.  In theory, any that are Ibuprofen-based (i.e., Advil, Midol) should work better because Ibuprofen helps with swelling in addition to pain.  Personally, I find the Ibuprofen-based only helps me with my back ache and not the cramps whereas Tylenol (acetamenophin-based) helps me with my cramps.

As far as when-you-can-just-sit-around methods (perhaps in conjunction with the pain med of your choice): Heating pads can help.  Curling up into a tight ball or sitting with your knees to your chest can help.

Make sure you're eating plenty of fiber (apple peels are the wrong kind of fiber, just so you're aware) to keep things moving down there as that can lead to further pain if you're prone to constipation when you're on your period.
