Mid-Thirties: Is it normal to forget now and have less concentration?

I hope this doesn't mean I'm over the hill!! Kidding aside, I think I'm already starting to forget things. Or, to put it in another way, I think about so many thinngs all at once, in a matter of seconds, then half hour later I can't remember all the things I was thinking about.

When I go to the supermarket, I purposely don't write a list so I can make my mind remember, but sometimes I forget a thing or two when I'm there.

I have always had difficulty with names - I tend to get nervous and I want to make a good impression (which is why I get nervous) and I cant remember a person's name sometimes. Or the other day, I was toasting bread and I went to my car to get something, then I saw a note in my car that I had, and I absolutely forgot my toast and burned it!

Is this something I should worry about? I'm also going back to school & hope I don't have memory issues and trouble studying!

I also have a friend my age who for years always would forget, to the point I thought she was insulting me. She would not even remember a conversation we had the night before. So she addressed it to her doctor, who, according to her, brushed it off and said to just read more books to help her memory. Don't know why he would say this, but she said he did not think she had pproblems at this age.

But, is this normal to start forgetting now?

NOHARD is right, sudoku is a really great way to work your mind. If you do applications on your phone, computer or a pad, you can use them whenever you have a chance. I use that, reading a book or Mahjong on my Kindle whenever I seem to get overwhelmed too, it's great as a stress reliever I have personally found (almost a reboot) since you have to concentrate on the game or story and remove your mind from your stress.

Good luck with your appointment!

Hi Athena, Look if you google adha in adults, that should calm you down on that lots of info to read.
But I think its like your frind, you just need to make your brain work harder, can you do Sudoku, or do word puzzles, there are so many things on the market today, you can even find brain test if you google them, some are fun and most will test your brain.
Good Luck

Hi,

No this is something that has happened the last two years. I believe it is stress - I am under a great deal of. But I also think it's my thyroid too. I'm slightly underactive with it, and it does effect hormones, so I will go to my doc in a few days and discuss it with him.

But I was thinking it might be that I'm getting older and things slowly start to become an issue I guess.

Hi, I just wanted to ask if these are all things that you have done your whole life or maybe for the last 15-20 years? Are you also spontaneous to the point that if you are overwhelmed with something at home you jump into the car &go to the store or any errand, maybe have "buyers remorse"?

I only ask because your description actually sounds just like me and I have been diagnosed as having adult ADHD. Those 50 thoughts that  run through your head but you can't recall moments later are called "racing thoughts" & on the heels of those you could completely  forget what you were doing and move on leaving "unfinished projects" everywhere! (Like the burned toast)

I have recently started a medication to help regulate myself and calm down a bit, that and therapy work magic I swear! I was tired of all these things happening and people telling me on one hand that forgetting things isn't very important and on the other lecturing me for forgetting things when I was just trying to do something nice for others (which was why I forget mostly) and people telling me that I am too much to take or talk too much or to settle down.

In any case, I would speak to your doctor and maybe ask for a consult with a specialist if he/she isn't comfortable working through a diagnosis. Hope this was helpful & good luck to you!

Sometimes memory loss comes from stress.  Sometimes it is that a person just has so much going on that it's hard to remember everything.  I don't think the kind of thing you're saying means early senility.
