Rash - other symptoms- Lyme disease?

My mother is almost 62 and is having some symptoms that are strange.  She started with a red circular rash with a red center close to her underarm on 1/30.  The rash became entirely red a couple of days later and is now fading.  At first she had headaches and some neck pain.  She went to the doctor Thursday for thyroid blood work and the other doctor in the practice looked at the rash briefly and told her to watch it and talk to her doctor when she comes back next week.  Over the weekend she started having chills, fever, nausea, diarrhea and stomach cramps.  She has a doctor's appointment tomorrow.  She owns 2 dogs and after looking at the rash on the computer thinks it might be Lyme's disease.  Should she ask to be put on a treatment program just to be safe because I understand that blood
work is not always accurate?  Any comments, suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks

If the rash has the typical bulls eye appearance of lyme then she should start treatment immediately with doxycycline. If there is any recall of a tick bite or suspicion of lyme then empiric medication should be started. Lyme's disease mimics a lot of things and symptoms are not specific. Diagnoses may be very difficult...read http://www.health911.org/content.php?21-Diagnoses like you said, the blood work is not always accurate and diagnosing lymes is more of a clinical judgment. I recommend going to your physician and getting a full work up with cultures and imaging. I also recommend going to a lymes expert for evaluation and advice.
