My boyfriend and father of our child became addicted to Oxy after an injury.  The doctor gave him Oxy after only seeing him for 5 min and didn't try any other type of pain med first.  Instead he wrote a pescription for 100 5mg to take 2 every 4 hrs for pain.  He is now on day 1 of cold turkey.  We tried to call our local dr and several other clinics BUT no one could see if or would see him.  I understand that not all dr's are specialized in dealing with addicts and withdrawals, but the way I see it they hand the pills out like candy they should be more than willing to help when this backfires.  I have spoken with the ER and the nurse told me it would most likely be 3 days of intense hell and that it would take roughly 2 weeks to get the drugs out of his system.  I have read all of the withdrawal symptoms and was advised to keep plenty of fluids on hand, benadryl, amodium ad, and tea for his stomach and to watch for intense aggression.  We called a clinic that deals with drug addiction but before you can do outpatient detox you have to have a phone screen, and paperwork!  The nurse at the ER said that if he got to the point where he couldn't handle the pain to bring him in and they would be able to give him something for the symptoms, but I am feeling lost in this scenario.  Besides the fact that I am angry at him for lying to me for the last 2 months and hurting our family I have to now find the strength and love to help support him through withdrawal.  Makes it even harder when nobody wants to help!  If anyone who has been through cold turkey can give me any pointers I would really appreciate it!

very very true he will make it! The fact that he has suppport will help greatly. It is hell he will probably try and give up but thats where support and encouragement from you and even here will help. After the physical WD he will then face the mental cravings and that will be just as equally difficult and I totally agree with what you said about dr.'s giving them out they should be just as ready to help when there is a problem its sad but true. Best of luck to you and your husband, and if he doesn't want to come on here and post you keep posting this is an awseome place for support and help. Take Care

Was your husband only taking them for 2 months?  How many per day?  That will also be a factor in how severe and long the withdrawals will last.  Hang in there.  He may have lied, but in the end, he still needs you, your love and your support.  Good Luck and keep posting.  I have found that this site is so helpful!!!!!!!  The people on here are AMAZING!

I am so sorry your post was not answered...I have not had w/d from oxy..but I have from methadone and hydros...he will feel bad for about a week...(physically)..symptoms range from person to person but common w/d symptoms include severe "runs",aching muscles and joints, fatigue/weakness,sleeplessness that may linger for several weeks or longer, anxiety, and a general feeling like the flu..a BAD flu.  In the health pages here..you will find info on the thomas recipe which includes vitamins and natural supplements that amy help him..make sure he stays hydrated..he will feel like he might die at times, but he will be feeling much better within the week..tell him to hang in there..and please try not to offset the w/ds with any other narcotics as this will only hinder the whole process..
