Darvon 65 (pink) addiction

jv1
I have been taking 20 darvon (pink) a day for about a year. I started with darvocet-100 10 years ago.  Long story short:  I love them but have to stop.  I quit drinking about 20 years ago and it was very hard.  I am afraid of the detox withdrfawl from darvon.  What can I expect?  Am I a candidate for suboxone?  I have an 8 year old daughter and wife and if not for them I would just kill myself rather than detoxing.  The darvon makes life better, but docs and pharmacies are wise to my multiple scripts, so I gotta quit, i  function well using them, work etc. and they get me sarted each morning.  Can't imagine not having them as my life crutch.  But my daughter needs me.  Help please?

Hi Sierra, you might want to start your own thread since this one is from 2008.  That way people won't overlook it because of the date.

My mom who is 71 is currently weaning off darvocet and she was extremely scared and upset when I had to come and tell her that I had just saw where the FDA finally enforced the ban and she wouldn't be able to get anymore darvocet.  Luckily she had been putting pills back over a period of time and she started out with a full bottle to wean from.  She had been on them for about 6 yrs. due to arthritis and recently we found out through an MRI that she has a pinched nerve that and some degeneration that is causing most of her problems.  Anyhow, her primary referred her to a pain mngt. dr. next Wednesday and she is hoping to get the shots (not sure, are they called cortisone shots?) and then after she weans off of darvocet she hopes that the shots and tylenol will be sufficient.  She has seen my struggle with lortab (you can click on my username and read if you are interested) and is determined not to go that route.  I really empathize with yours and her situation.  There isn't much to switch to except something stronger and withdrawals are h*ll if you ever have to get off of them.

I wish you the best in whatever decision you make. lyn

I am so very frustrated now due to the "withdrawal" of Darvocet from the market!  I was just prescribed Vicodin as a replacement and now am concerned about it being more habit forming!

I have been on Darvocet for decades with NO addiction issues.

Again, just very unhappy!  Also, the Darvocet worked really well for me!  Just took my first Vicodin and didn't really help pain!

Sorry you had to waste so much money and time on sub. It's not the miracle drug everyone thinks. I used to use a lot of pink darvon 65. Prophoxiphine isn't good for the liver but at least  your not taking tylenol. I didn't find the withdrawl too terrible but no picnic either. The hard part for me wasn't getting off on them, it was staying off of them. all the best

still doing about 20 of propoxyphene caps (pink)only.  reason liver is still good i guess and i don't drink and stay away from tylenol

Can i taper with darvon, suboxone caused edema and other problems.  i have a np friend who i think would assist with taper and hold the darvon because i cannot self limit.

my bowels will expolde soon, and ironically it was a gastroenterologist who first prescribed the darvon with the understanding that he would not ever prescirbe anything stronger, oxy, etc.  i have to stop and fear i cannot deal with WD symptoms.l

I too would be more worried about my liver shutting down or the damage to the rest of my mind and body. It takes an irrevocable decision to get and to stay clean. It is hard and grueling but in the end is worth it. W/D is only a small part of recovery. Physically it's awful but the mental of staying clean is the hardest part.
I have not seen veyor here, but worried878 is still very active here. She also has nurse training. Good luck and I hope you decide to quit this madness before you lose everything.

Hi there, are u still taking 20 a day.  My God i cant imagine what that most be doing to your stomach and stuff.whenever i would take one i felt like my liver was raw, i mean i dont know how to explain it, but  it wasnt good. Did u go thru detox at the facility? Did u not like to suboxone? There must be something u can substitute it with that wont do as much damage.. A few of our members are nurses, i hope one of them sees your posts and comments.  I also would like to see what they suggest.

You still there?  I went to Fla Meditox outpatient immediately after posting my first message and just last night saw responses. It's August and I'm still using the darvon after getting new scripts. Tried suboxone and several thousand $ later it was back to darvon.  I felt like walking death when I tried to quit, like walking through mud, no energy, depressed, no joy as far as the mind could see..  I feel like a wuss but I am scared to stop. Job is still there and family but don't know how much longer I can hold on.  contstipation is a real problem now too.

No experience with detoxing from that particular drug but it would be compared to a narcotic like hydrocodone, oxy, etc.....codeine is a lighter narcotic...darvon is about in the same category...a weak opiate....follow narcotic withdrawal protocol...get the thomas recipe and keep posting....you should not have severe WDs but everyone is different...I just WD from that dose of a much stonger narctoic and managed physcially like the flu and felt much beter in 4 days

I'm 54yrs. old and started off with Darvocet, then graduated to Loratab, and know exactly how you feel. I could take my meds 4-5 in the morning and work away, with a stash in my pocket to take during the day till I could get home. Well my Dr. retired and I've been withdrawing now for about two weeks, symptoms will be weakness, nausea, diarhea, and some convulsions mostly coming from the stomach area. Be like the worst flu you ever had, If you could just take sick leave for the flu is previlent now, have your wife look after you, maybe give you just one pill when you are convulsing the worst. Rest (you'll sleep alot to try and get away from the misery), eat soup when you can, you'll survive, I have so far, think I'm over the hump. Need to talk call me 8283052972 misery loves company.  good luck, veyor

Hi! Well I have no experience with Darvon so I can't help you there.  I will say that you have come to the right place for support during any type of withdrawl and detox. I'm sure someone here will have info on Darvon so hang tight.  In the meantime good luck with leaving the pills behind you and getting back to a regular life. You can do it! Your daughter is lucky to have you.  Be strong!
