Detox

by eatmydust, Feb 26, 2008 07:25PM
I had my 1st of 3 back syrgeries in 1986. As my back has worsened my meds have increased. It's time to see what a day looks like without the fog of drugs. I currently take: 40MG Oxy X 2, 350MG Soma X 4, 5MG Valium X 3, 20 MG Baclafin X 3, 300MG Gabapentin X 2, 800 MG Ibuprofen X3.

Would it be getter to check in and get detoxed or to self detox. If I checked in to get detoxed, what would detoxing be like and what would the facility be like? What do you do all day at a clinic?

How would you do it by myself? Is the risk of a seizure to high when I live alone?

I would say detox would be your best bet ,that is several different meds including a benzo that needs to be slow tapered with the help of a doctor . You can get off of all of this ,plz let us know what you decided to do.

You are on several different kind of meds. You are going to need to do a slow taper as
Avisg suggest. She is VERY knowledgeable of this.
Some drugs can send you into a seizure so you have to be very careful. You can do this but you will have to be very careful and it might be a really good idea to check into a clinic. You can go and see what they are like and talk to them. I have no experience in this but some in here may. Just hold tight it may be in the morning before you get a better answer.

If you can swing it you may want to consider a rapid detox. They put you under for a day or two and when you wake up your clean. I have been a cronic pain patient for years also. I have stopped several times for months or years at a time but the pain brings me back to the meds once I can't stand the pain any longer.  I am at day 10 currently and it has been pretty rough. My next time I plan on trying rapid detox. I am not an addict, I dont abuse but I am physically dependent so I won't ever go to a traditional rehab or 12 step.

Here is an article on rapid detox for all who a considering it

The dangers of rapid-detox drug treatment
The Ontario Coroner's Office is investigating a second death connected to a chain of drug treatment clinics that offer a a highly controversial treatment that has divided addiction experts. So-called "rapid detox" treatment uses a cocktail of medications to speed through the withdrawl process while the patient remains under sedation. As part of the procedure, the patient is implanted with a pellet of the opate antagonist Naltrexone to prevent them from having intense cravings or obtaining any "high" from opiates once the treatment is complete.

At first glance this sounds like it could be a great procedure -- why suffer through weeks of withdrawl symptoms when you can get through the worst of it in a few hours while unconcious? However, some experts claim it is biologically impossible to fast-track withdrawal and that the dangers of the procedure are not worth the potential payoff.

The Toronto Star has a very detailed investigation in to the latest death, including a lot of background information on the procedure for those who may be curious about pursuing it. It looks to be somewhat of a last-resort option, but it seems to me it won't do you much good being clean if there's a good chance that you'll die in the process

Can you financially afford to go to rehab?  I mean the off work time and all?  this can play a factor but getting off the drugs is a priority....No one can tell you that you can do it alone without any reprocussions...nor even in a rehab facilty without some suffering...have you talked to the doc who prescribes to you about it?

I believe you need to talk this over with your Dr. You are on so many meds, there needs to be a plan of action to get off of them.

Rapid detox sounds like a sure way for a seizure.I have been on most of these drugs for over 20 years.

I do not abuse them either, but I do take them 5 - 6 hours apart instead of the 8 hours.

That is a long time for your body to be dependant upon those meds.  Have you ever mentioned a desire to be off to your doctor?
You will find wonderful people and information here - but given the nature of some of your meds...use caution in your detox regardless of the route you elect to take.  I would like to say that I am against rapid detox based upon all unbiased info I have read...it just seems so dangerous (& expensive).
For myself and many others, inpatient detox just is not practical- cost is an issue when it is in excess of a few grand....not to mention the length of time you are away at the facility.  The ones I have seen on line all are very much designed to seem more like a home than a medical center, yet you receive consistent care from a knowledgable staff.  (At least that is how it should be - it probably varies).  Any reputable place would encourage you to visit the site...be familiar with what to expect...I would think.
Best of luck regardless of the path you choose.  As you see here most of us are detoxing at home, sharing helpful info., providing constant support...at a great price!  As we have all stated, please talk with your doctor...then read over some journals and some posts - as I am sure you have - Everyone is very compassionate here from what I have found.
Do be sure to implement a strong vitamin program.....And keep posting!!!

that is a very long time, and a lot of meds...I REALLY think you should go to a detox faucility and let them monitor you.....That is the safest way..Be honest with your doctor and go for it!!!
I am rooting for you..
