Suboxone

Can someone explain the label on the suboxone bottle. It reads 8mg-2mg. He is prescribed one pill in the morning 1/2 in the afternoon and 1/2 in the evening. How many mg. is he actually taking.  What matters the 8 or the 2 and what does each number mean?

Please do not scare me away from this.  I've been told by reliable sources that if I follow the MD's plan for me down to the letter, I will be able to wean off Suboxone in about 3 weeks.  Have you ever taken Tramadol?  The withdrawal is unbelievably hard.  People say that it was much easier to w/d from heroin, morphine, cocaine and Vicodins!  If the sub doctor says he cannot use Suboxone on me, then I trust he will give me a prescription for Prozac or another antidepressant.  I already have Bentyl (another "must") and can get Immodium.  But given my medical problems and the weakness of my insides already, the cold turkey withdrawal will be very damaging and frankly, I'm scared ********.  By your surprise that I wanted to use Suboxone to get off Ultram, I'm guessing you don't know about the w/ds from Tramadol (Ultram); otherwise, you'd understand.  I could handle a less violent w/d, say from Suboxone, that is if I screw up and don't follow the doctor's directions, but I know I don't want to suffer, and I would definitely suffer terribly from Tramadol w/d.  I have already attended two meetings for NA, but won't go back until I'm clean.  So......that's the story.  I was told they don't want anyone at NA meetings who are on pills, so that's why I only attended two--but I do have the NA hard-bound handbook on addiction and have started to read it.  I'm ready to quit---I need to quit---I'm going to quit.

everytime i read a post like yours i feel the need to appoligize to my family, i put my mom through so much **** as a result of my addiction, they started taking me to the methadone clinic when i was in college because i was not ready to get clean, so my doctor convinced us that methadone was safer than other opiates, i remmeber my father crying when i walked out of the clinic, he has never done drugs and he felt so helpless, they put me through nice rehabs several times, i did the suboxne matience also, it worked for a while but then my body just wanted more and more, then i started to feel sick from the drug that they put in suboxone, the narcaan/revia, so i had to just stop all the drugs
my parents ended up going to alonon, there was not a narconon where we lived, it seemed to help them, i hated when they went to alonon, they would kick me out the house and not give me money, but i am glad they did this because now i am clean, addiction is really a family disease, it hurts the family just as much as it hurts the addict

My daughter has just returned from treatment for methadone addiction.  She is taking suboxone.  I have heard good and bad.   She tried to stop the suboxone in treatment but her methadone addiction is so bad.   She was taking 120 mg a day, purchasing it from a "friend".  She has been using an opiate of some kind regularly for 7 years.   What I read here about the suboxone scares me, but the methadone scares me worse.  She got a prescription yesterday from her doctor.  She is on 8/2 mg a day.  The doctor said he would discuss tapering her off in 6 months.   She has emotional issues she needs to address.   She has 6 weeks of outpatient with the rehab center and her NA meetings.  I am so scared for her.   Her self esteem is in the toilet.  Our entire family has been hurt.  She is facing legal proceedings for theft.  If any of you have any advice please talk to me.    A prayer would be nice too.

wait!!!!! you want to take suboxone to detox off of ultram?????
please start another thread and talk to other people before you even consider that, if you are having a hard time tapering ultram, forget about getting off the sub
as far as going to meetings on pills, dont worry about that!! seriously!!!!! its much better for you that you go no matter what, we cannot get off these drugs on our own we need help from other people, no better place to find this help then na
infact people pay lots of money to goto fancy treatment centers that just talk to them about the steps and take them to free meetings
i started going to meetings wat before i was ready to get completly clean, its ok

I would very much like to see your website re the 12-steps dealing with maintenance drugs.  I will be meeting for the first time with my Suboxone doctor next Thurs and am guessing I will start on Suboxone very soon after that.  I am dependent on Tramadol, the worst possible drug from which to cold turkey.  At my age and given my physical (gastro) problems, I truly believe a cold turkey w/d would kill me.  Maybe I'm being a bit overdramatic, but I was so frightened as the date that I had originally set for w/d drew closer, my total terror landed me in the hospital with chest pain, sweating, nausea, etc.!!  So I discussed Suboxone treatment with some people and figured this is the only way of detoxing for me, other than spending $7500 for unconscious rapid detox in Michigan.  My insurance co. has given me the OK and I'm told by folks on this website and a few from NA that if I follow the doctor's precautions and rules TO THE LETTER, I should come through my Sub term with no problems.  I have already attended two NA meetings, but don't want to go back till I'm off these damn Trams.  I intend to go to NA for as long as I can, the rest of my life, perhaps!!  At least, I'll have a "rest of my life" now.  Had I stayed on this rat poison Tramadol, in another year, I can't imagine what would have become of me.  Blessings to all warriors here!

the best thing it to encourage him to attend na na matter what.....keep in mind that suboxone is a long term treatment, it is not something you can walk away from without suffering great pain
in my experience suboxone wd was harder than my actual drug of choice it actually took longer too
but i wasnt ready to give up a chemical peace of mind, so it served its purpose, i am asuming you are on here for a family member, its really their choice how long they take the suboxone
the problem i see with rehab doctors sending patients home with a suboxone prescription is this, for one, all the half way houses will turn you away if you are on sub., and some patients leaving rehab have been kicked out or lost their homes, 2. some addicts maybe fighting custody battles, matience drugs do not fly in most drug courts, 3. people who leave rehab usually are starting over and cannot afford these pills, most sub. clinics cost $200-500 a month, once they run out of sub. they are back on the drug that landed them in rehab because they never got clean in the first place, they came in with an opiate addiction and left rehab with a script for a narcotic
i have a website i can direct you to that is more 12step oriented when dealing with matience drugs, i will only send it to you if you ask, i never force recovery on anyone, but i know whats kept me clean all these years
good luck, i hope your loved one get to a place where drugs are no longer an option

Has he talked to his doctor about the length of time he wants to be on the Sub? Or the length of time the doctor feels he should be on it? (Although lots of Dr's want you to be on it for long time...more money for them). It's about 15-21 days on Sub before getting addicted to it. So if he's gonna do a short term Sub, he should start to slowly taper til he's done.

so is this a high dose? He's been on it for a week today through an IP detox.  Dr. gave him a month's supply at this same dose.  Is it a good idea to start tapering down now.  He is going to therapy and NA meetings, but we are really worried about WD from Sub. I want him to start tapering down what do you think?

The 8 is the number that you count. So he is getting 8 in the morning 4 in the afternoon and 4 in the evening, for a total of 16 mg a day.
