Is it just me.....

....or does Librium not really work for anxiety like zanex does?

I had taken 25mg for 2 days and felt drunk and woozy, but no real appreciable relief from the anxiety. WHICH IS BY FAR the worse symptom of wd IMHO.

Just wondering what the most potent/effective anti-anxiety meds others have taken.

Feedback anyone?

The best thing for the anxiety is either Valium, Klonopin or Ativan.  If you can't get any of those, Xanax will also work.  If your doc knows your withdrawing you should be able to get some.  These are just short term solution= long term some antidepressents like Effexor, Paxil or Cymbalta work well.  Hang in there!

hmmmm, thanx for your response lurker. I wonder too if anyone can give me feedback as to weather or not the Librium was really a good idea to begin with.....

....I guess I am asking if Librium is more or less aggressive a treatment for anxiety as say the ones mentioned above. Is my Doc treating me aggressively?

If Librium 'should' be as effective as those others, then my concern is that other drugs may not give me the relief I would like either.

Going back to my doc and asking for an alternative may not help me then either.

If Librium is indicated in my situation and it does not work, I am wondering what kind of expectation I should have for an alternative.

I am starting to get the impression that Librium is designed as a sort of 'non-narcotic' solution compared to others, due to the fact that it is typically designed to treat w/d patients. Or so I have been told.

Librium is the drug of choice to treat alcohol withdrawals and works quite effectively for that.  In my nursing experience, it is NOT a good choice for anxiety or depression as it is a benzodiazepine and not a very good one.  In your situation, I'd be making sure that the doctor knows how anxious you are feeling and ask for something you can take long term that is not a benzo.  They are very addicting and the withdrawals are not great.  They are good for short term anxiety or for breakthrough anxiety when combined with some of the other drugs I mentioned.  And Ativan or Xanax are much better choices and easier on your system than Librium.  You're correct that Librium is a nonnarcotic but it isn't a benign drug either.  good luck

I was just reading these responses (I don't know about librium)...

I have tried effexor and cymbalta and they made my anxiety WAY worse.  My docs are very hesitant to give me anything else, especially xanax (was addicted to it).  I know effexor/cymbalta are supposed to lessen anxiety but...I dunno, I would try other things like klonopin and stuff.

I have ongoing anxiety, not just when I went through w/d.  So my case is probably diffferent but I thought I'd just comment anyway :D

a little over a year ago, i started having some serious anxiety issues and went to a psychiatrist who was a specialist in anxiety at UCLA...  he prescribed klonopin - to help me sleep, but also because enough stayed in my system during the following day to combat the anxiety as well.

if you are prone to addiction with benzo's, i would choose another route.  but for me, it worked great.  the only downside is, in 50% of people it can cause depression.  that did happen to me, so i ended up taking a low dose of welbutrin to "balance it out."  it worked wonders... (but like i said - LOW does od Welbutrin, as if i took any more than the lowest dose, it made me anxious/jittery.)  100 mg. was perfect.

I've taken over 8 mg's before and survived very pleasantly, I would highly advise taking that much though...I would start around 1 mg to 2mg's at the most a day.

In fact I wouldn't take it at all...its only going to prolong your w/d's.  I'd flush them and just be rid of it, you will feel so much better than still having your heart race and pound and worrying every couple hours about taking another pill that is a narcotic too, and just end up dependent again.  Be strong you will feel so much better physically and about yourself.
