promethazine

Not sure if this is right forum.... I have a question on this anti-nausea med... Last night I took it becuase i have been having bad stomach problems, and I wanted to sleep all night. It worked for the most part, but now its about 16 hours later, and im soooo damn tired still. Liek a sedated tired, and my whole body is 'running on fumes', no energy and weak.. i woke up groggy as hell, but i figured it would pass once i got to work....wrong...I had to struggle to keep my eyes open. And now its not any better...Does this stuff last that long? Has anyone experience this?

I had a single beer last night 2 hours before i took it...and it was a weak beer, but could it of had added to the drowsiness to last this long? I want to go to sleep, but im afriad it might be something else trying to kill me...call me paraniod but it just ***** feeling like your not in your own body...

thanks

phenergan is an antihistamine..not habit forming..but has a very drowsy side effect for many...25 mg is the usual dose...may try 1/2 that next time around..and avoid alcohol

I have the same reaction when I take Phenegren...don't feel like I fully wake up for about a complete day after I have taken it, and yes, I also feel kind of like I am 'out of body' for many hours after I wake up. It is not only an anti-nausea drug, but is also used as a sedative and for anxiety.

i took that drug a lot during the times I was an inpatient at a detox centre. I don't think I really needed it but it gave me a nice floaty feeling before going to bed  - who could tell I'm an adddict with staements like that!

Anyway, it never had the kind of effect on me that you're describing and I know it is contraindicated with alcohol. I just checked on some online health journals and there are loads of other things that could cause you to have a bad reaction to this med. The obvious and snesible thing to do is talk to your doc about it. All meds carry a risk of undesirable side effects but mostly, those effects don't manifest in people otherwise they wouldn't get licensed. However, some people do react badly and with this drug, you may just be one of those people. There are other anti-emetics so maybe you need to try something else? Definitely talk to your doctor or if you can't wait that long, maybe a pharmacist could at least put your mind at rest?

The drug you are taking is "Phenegren."  The name you are calling it is the generic form.  My doctor prescribes that for me due to nausea and diarhea associated with some medical issues I have.  It does make me very sleepy!  I would suggest that you do not drink alcohol before taking it - because it will make the pill seem stronger.  However, I've never been drowsy 16 hours later.  It does help you sleep though.  Maybe it was the combination of the alcohol and the pill?

Maybe talk to your pharmacist about it?  Or, your doctor?

Good luck,
Janet
